Christmas adverts
It's that time of year for the Christmas adverts. John Lewis is normally a favourite and can be a tear jerker. Not this year it looks like a little shop of horrors tribute.
Aldi is a cheeky funny. Plumb crack sneeked in hopefully the little ones will skip past it.
No standout one that is a bit different really this year. There is a raccoon for Guardians of the Galaxy fans. Then there is M&S
Hannah Waddington, who is great in Ted Lasso teamed up with some Meatloaf track. So a great start but then it does some sort of anti Christmas message or are they saying don't shop at M&S. Whatever it was I didn't get it's Christmas message or was it trying too hard to be some sort of Grinch thing that just went over my head.
So my winner of the adverts this year is Boots.

Re: Christmas adverts
I see these are getting a great seal of publicity at the moment, BBC articles, etc.
But does it actually influence anyone on here's shopping habits? I know it makes zero difference to me, in fact having seen a few of them I must admit I couldn't tell you which is for who. The biggest influence for me is the Morissons "Spend £40 get a fiver of point towards a later shop" style things, and I doubt any advert would have me Googling to see if there is a Waitrose in Shrewsbury, let alone making a special trip for something.

I tend to skip all adverts or flick to another channel. I thought the BBC didnt do adverts or was it an article on adverts.
Most tend to put me off shopping for their products. Its mainly online now. The odd one in the corner isnt too bad but some take over the web page. Does it pay to annoy your customers.
I have found another that is worth one watch at least ......

Re: Christmas adverts
Slightly off topic but still an ad albeit for a Channel 4 programme. This trailer was a bit of an eye opener last night

The Marks & Spencer advert has changed quite a few people's shopping habits. I know several offline who won't be shopping there as a result and one of them sold their shares after seeing it.
Trashing Christmas traditions may play well in advertising agency land, less so outside the M25. For anyone who hasn't seen it, it features Christmas cards being blowtorched, decorations thrown into the shredder, and an Elf being beaten with a baseball bat.
As to the John Lewis advert, it features a carnivorous plant which amongst other things tries to eat the household's dog, the mind boggles as to why they thought that this was a good idea.

Re: Christmas adverts
Whenever I'm unlucky enough to walk in on TV all the ads seem to be for charities.

Salvor
So it wasn't just me then. It didn't encourage me to shop there but selling the shares is a bigger step.

Re: Christmas adverts
Some like tradition, some don't. Some are old-fashioned and some aren't. Some have their heads stuck up their backsides and are living in the past, but if that's their wish, respect that, and not for me to say different. I actually applaud M&S. It's quite funny, and with a message, but I would love to smash an elf to shreds with a cricket/baseball bat, as does less damage than a cricket ball and that gives me a chance to let off some steam and let my turkey laden swollen stomach gets some much needed exercise
But seriously, there are some who either have no sense of humour or actually didn't watch or listen carefully to the ad. In the end, to quote meatloaf.......................I just won't do that!!!!
https://youtu.be/94GslcJcaWU
p.s. I hear they sold a ton of sequinned dresses at £59.95. Plus, it's about time that it gained a newer audience who realized that all is not fuddy-duddy any more. Share price doesn't appear to have suffered with all the(supposed) bad reviews, quite the opposite. Now going to burn something, place a picture of Linda Blair on top of the tree and find an elf or two and poke their eyes out, as don't have a cricket or baseball bat.

Re: Christmas adverts
I think the "message" from M&S might be changing.
The advert seems to have been cut. I don't know if this is by design or just a cost cutting exercise as less time is less money.
It's been on 3 or 4 times now in its reduced form. Has the backlash got to them. I hadn't realised how much bad feelings there were about this.
I think 2023 adverts are below average compared to previous years.
Maybe I should start an all time top 10 and a worst of all time top 10. I suspect the latter might just be forgotten.

I actually saw it last night in the middle of "The 6 Million Dollar Man". I thought it was quite short, but apart from the M&S logo at the end I've actually no idea what it was selling or trying to achieve, unless M&S are selling garden shredders this Xmas.

I'm not sure that works. How will I notice that particular saving, is it a penny off a turkey?
If it was a noticeable saving like half price turkey's I might agree but that gesture is just that, a gesture. Bah humbug!

I'm not sure that works.
It works by their customers thinking "Hey, they're doing something for us, not trying to cram their shop with people who will just go back to Aldi after Xmas, they're my friends. I'll do ALL my shopping there and ignore the M&S Unicorn Tear infused Trufflle filled Iguana cake"

Iguana in a cake?
Aren't they normally served on a stick?
