Re: Mr Bates vs the post office
I found it difficult to watch as my blood pressure rose to dangerous levels. I had read quite a bit about it previously and was just astonished at the PO's appalling treatment of these folk. What it brought home to me is the steady dehumanization of folk in the workplace these days. You are now just a droid, paid not to think but just do, to act in a certain prescribed manner, to blindly follow rules and procedures which you and your colleagues and indeed those who wrote them know fine well are unworkable, unrealistic and just plain wrong. I pity those entering the workplace these days. A place of misery with little camaraderie and affinity with your fellow workers, a place devoid of those little moments which make the daily drudge a little more bearable. You are just a resource not a human being. O tempora, o mores.....

Re: Mr Bates vs the post office
Just finished watching this superb and moving 4 part series. Indeed had been aware of the scandal for many years as a result of articles in Private Eye. So though very little in the series was a surprise in terms of the abominable behaviour of the PO - the vivid portrayal of 'insignificant' people being crushed by the management of a quasi state body was gut wrenching. The culpability of Fujitsu in this scandal is touched upon but not seriously addressed. For instance - were they hiding the extent of the faults in the Horizon system from the PO?
The acting from a bunch of TV stalwarts was superb and of course Toby Jones just gets better and better.
The downside - as mentioned above - ITVX adverts - the Direct Line ads have ensured that I will never avail myself of their services.

There does seem to be some evidence for this. The PO's own IT specialists were prevented by Fujitsu from 'looking at' the innards of their system. This was reported in (later episodes of) the BBC R4 documentary series on this topic: "The Great Post Office Trial".
