As I have a Cineworld Unlimited card, what I have been known to do with some of these unfeasibly long films is to book two showings of the film, then go and watch the first half and leave and then return to the second showing to see the remainder.

That's a great idea. I don't have a card like that though.

I just need ten minutes in the middle of the film to massage some life back into my buttocks, get some blood back into my feet and to empty my bladder. Maybe do some stretches or a quick walk around the block too.

I didn't really get into Dune 1 or have read the book(S) etc.

I've read the second one is highly rated but so was the first. I'm not intending to see it in the cinema and will probably see it when it's on disc on the home cinema for all the reasons above.

Yeah, I know I'll enjoy it more second time around at home, but the missus wants to see it. (She's a big fan of the books).

Alternatively watch the David Lynch version which, whilst it botches much of the final third of the book, it is far more entertaining.

The difference between the Baron Harkonnens is a good example. Lynch's is a flamboyant Machiavellian psychopath with tremendous presence. The new version is a fat bald bloke in a brown robe who is like a bored mob boss/accountant who mumbles.

Costumes, sets and the actors in the original are vastly superior.

I made it!

It was rather good too. A lot to cram in 2 and 3/4 hours but they did it well. I thought Timothy Chamolet was really, really good.

Austin Butler was a nasty piece of work.

Zendaya frowned a lot.

Yes, Lynch's version is the 1984 film that cost a fortune to make and which he has disowned. IMHO it had much better sets, music, costumes and far better actors who didn't mumble. And it has Pugs. The producers knew that unless you had read the book you would struggle with the film because of the complex background, so they had the Emperor's daughter explain the setting before the pre-opening credits scene. The 1984 version also includes a lot more of the key dialogue (e.g. "There's no need to fight over me...").

Unlike the 2021 version, most of the interior scenes were well lit so you could actually see what was going on. It's a shame that the final third of Lynch's version falls apart and rushes to the ending. I gather that the money and the studio's patience was running out. Sometimes a shortage of cash can inspire a really creative ending ("Cross of Iron" springs to mind), but from what I've read most of the people involved with Lynch's version were seriously pissed off by the end and were desperate for it to finish because the production had been so difficult and stressful.

The Sci-Fi channel made a three part mini-series "Frank Herbert's Dune" in 2000 (lasting 280 minutes) which isn't rushed. Much better than the new version IMHO. They then made a sequel "Frank Herbert's Children of Dune" which covered the next two books. It was probably a good idea to stop there as God Emperor of Dune would largely consist of three hours of inner monologue whilst staring into the desert

Oh the video shop. Azad Video to be precise. The scene of many a Friday post work argument between me and the wife.

Between forgetting membership cards and pleading with the staff (who knew you!) to let you have a film, to deciding which load of crap you were going to rent because some git hadn't returned the top title that was due back at 6pm.

She wanted 'Dirty Dancing - the early years'' (the prequel/sequel where they couldn't afford Swayze) and I wanted Death Cop 5 (the previous 4 starred Dolph Lundgren, but he was dead for episode 5*)

Death Cop 5' it is then. We haven't seen Death Cop 1 to 4, but it doesn't matter. Spend the next 10 minutes rewinding the tape and then 20 minutes unwravelling it from the heads of your video recorder and.....

Dune 2 fantastic! Couldn't believe it when I looked at my watch and two hours had passed.

Poor Things also quite long and equally entertaining in a different way. Some brilliant "Steam Punk" stuff.

4k UHD available on the 14th May. Streaming likely on 16th April.

I'm not sure which platforms will have it available but generally it's not as good quality as the disc.

As you can only watch it for the first time once, I might wait the extra month for the better experience.
