You've completely misunderstood, perhaps my words were chosen badly. I know a chord is usually formed of three notes, not four. Not what I meant at all.

He played four notes (each a single piano key) in various sequences and different timings, to show how these four notes could be shown to form the basis of almost any pop song. He then used the same approach, but with the four chords played on the piano this time rather than single piano keys, to develop the same theme a little more 'impressively'. It was both entertaining and a real eye opener, and made for a good, boozy night.

I was merely illustrating the point that Kiloran heard one thing buried deep in 'White Light/White Heat', but the same notes triggered thoughts of lots of different songs for other Fools.

It was more that you can busk most of the popular stuff with 3. ;)

4 is almost into jazz

In their simplest form, a chord is made up of 3 notes known as a triad, and the quality of the chord is determined by the intervals between the notes. By adding a fourth note they enable a composer to add a kind of 'colour' to the chord based on their own interpretation.

There are basically 7 different types of 4 note chords. Like triads, 4 note chords can be built on any of the 12 different keys on a piano keyboard. Meaning the total number of 4 note chords available is 84. (12 different keys x 7 different types).

The same structure continues to this day. Here are 38 hit song riffs in 5:30mins, done by an Aussie musical comedy act.
'Axis of Awesome - 4 Four Chord Song (with song titles)' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pidokakU4I

ps. Be cautioned. I first watched this 10+ years ago and what it revealed forever changed how I hear music. Ie I now instantly recognise 'the cynical structure' and it's like Oh gawd.... aaanoooother 4-chord song....! It might well 'out' some old favs of yours too!

Just because... hadn't heard this for a while and it always sounds good. Love the bass entering at 0:16, and the bass over feedback re-entry about 2:52
Cool video too. Wim Wenders directed, and Mark 'E' Everett* looks like the Unabomber with a scary full-face beard

Some walk the earth just like many millions have done previously, others choose their own different path: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-51893184

Choosing just two tracks from an extensive and incredibly rich back catalogue from Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, and various other projects with Lady Jaye amongst others, I've gone for what I think is the very first Throbbing Gristle recording, which I bought back in 1978, and probably my favourite Pyschic TV track:

This music has been part of my life for over 40 year, thanks Genesis.

Reminded by some posts above, the Ukelele Orchestra show how many songs use the same chords to the extent that you can sing them all simultaneously:

Parce mihi, Domine. tr. Spare me, Lord. Seems appropriate at the moment.

A tribute to Jan Garbarek and The Hilliard Ensemble by Gavino Murgia, Cantar Lontano and Marco Mencoboni.

Punchier, tighter, more engaging. Memorable for me as I bought this album to accompany a nightime hiking ascent of Mt. Fuji, and I'd just learnt a childhood 'best mate'; played in this band..., so distant, yet not....
IMHO this^ has a lot more going on and for it than the Stone Roses (bands/tracks out at a similar time that x-bred at their fringes).

Finding myself with a bit more time (and guitar) on my hands than usual I've turned to youtube for inspiration

and found this by Tony McManus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWfVznJpvIc

He's a true gent - and I had the good fortune to attend a masterclass he gave in Australia a few years ago
- this video does a really good job of going a little bit further in to how something might be done rather than just showing it
- even if folk stuff isn't your bag if you've got the time it's worth a watch (it almost might work as a guided hypnosis given his manner)

Just to lift the general mood a bit - more Eels !!!
I love this song, and the woman with the 'pixie' haircut is ...entrancing/bewitching/unique/bostin' - I'm more of a long hair guy, but... ;)
I also like the saturated colour on the garden bits, so it looks like a 'family snap' on a film camera (probably a 126 cartridge)
