I think this is an excellent series. Great characters. Great stories.

He can't chase anyone, or even drive. Which means it can't be the usual "chase scene -> punch up" from your typical private detective series. He has to out-think the bad guys instead. Very clever.

Just watched S2 E1 of Mum - made me cry! Her dreadful family!

Hope it gets better for her.

I also saw Motherland, I quite liked it but the perpetually absent father (I think we saw him once and he looked about 20 years younger than her, very odd - he was the 'Blockbusters guy' from The Office) was just unrealistic and the main character was not someone I could feel a lot of sympathy for as she was so cold to everyone. I think it did a good job of showing how cliques look from the outside and breaking down how they are not real, but I'm not sure I needed a TV show to do that. maybe me not having kids is part of the reason I wasn't that keen on it.

Is anyone watching Shetland on BBC? Nathan Henshall's in it, I remember him from the excellent Lipstick in your Collar.

"Life on Mars" and Ashes to Ashes" are worth a watch if you haven't seen them.

Loved it, so gentle and well observed.

Will add the new series to my catch up list.

I've just come to this thread and was going to suggest 'Mum' to someone earlier who said they'd enjoyed Frazier.

Lesley Manville is superb as a widow whose daft son and even dafter girlfriend live with her. There are the foul mouthed parents of her late husband and then her bitchy sister in law (Dorothy Atkinson) who has some superb lines. Also there is the non-love interest provided by Peter Mullan as a friend of her ex husband.

There are some lovely touches, each episode is about a different month in her life, she's always putting stuff out in the bin in the opening credits and the kids are always eating.

The episodes stand alone but it really does improve if you can watch a few.

Stranger Things on Netflix. Bit Sci-fi and also retro.

Started to watch Season 1 last night with my son, and we love it.

Great characters from the off, and the huge Netflix production values shine through to deliver what looks like a brilliant homage to Steven Spielberg, Stephen King, and all the great 80's sci-fi that I loved as a kid - brilliant.

Scary and sweet at turns, we're really looking forward to catching all three series over the coming winter.

Cheers,

I watched most of Jessica Jones and gave the cross over shows Luke Cage and Daredevil a quick go but they didn't grip me. Another from the Marvelverse Punisher was OK.
The Ozarks is good, a violent thriller set in sleepy US holiday town about drugs and money laundering, Umbrella Factory I'm just finishing S1 looking forward to the next one, time travel, heroes fantasy. Mindhunter was excellent about the birth of the FBI serial killer psychological profiler unit.
On a lighter note I liked the sitcom Last Man Standing starring American Tim 'tool man' Allen and strange view of heaven The Good Place.

+1 for Mindhunter on Netflix. Brilliantly paced and interesting cinematography. There's an Edward Hopper feel to the look of it sometimes and at other times a seemingly deliberate symmetry to the framing of shots. I like that.

- loved it; although now I am hunting for one of these https://reverb.com/au/item/1229232-sony ... apan-nagra :D

for TV shows I can recommend:
"Trapped" - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3561180
"Midnight Sun" - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4836846

as being in a similar vein to those mentioned in the original post

Jed Mercurio has become famous for his Line of Duty and Bodyguard but his Bodies (2004-6) was based on his early career as a hospital doctor and his book of the same name. This can be very hard viewing and some scenes are harrowing but it also has its funny moments. The series won the Royal Television Society Award for Best Drama Series. Brilliant. On the iPlayer.

I'm currently enjoying 'Temple' on Sky Atlantic, with Mark Strong; it's a sort of UK 'Breaking Bad' although set in the world of healthcare and not narcotics, and is a remake of a Swedish series apparently.

And I'll continue to bang the drum for 'Berlin Station' starring British actors Richard Armitage and Rhys Ifans, and set within the CIA's Berlin operation. There have been 3 series, all pretty faultless TV thrillers IMHO. I watched it on 'More 4' but I understand it's on Netflix too. It really is first class TV.

Yes, quite enjoying the Umbrella Factory at the moment...binge watch. Just started series 2.

I watched Ozark series 1 but stumbled with series 2. I might go back and try again!

I got into "Bloodline " which I enjoyed right up until the last episode when they managed to really ruin it!

Did you mean 'The umbrella academy'?

If you did, and liked it, then you might also like 'The Boys'.

Two of the better series in the genre IMO.
