Sadly, looking at it closely, I saw the short wave band didn't go far enough to pick up signals from Sputnik. So bang goes yet another happy childhood memory. :(

Ah you're assuming that either the rheostat or markings are accurate? And don't discount aliasing!

I remember hearing a story about a kid who got convinced it was OK to eat worms. I thought it was made up. :D

Drank lovely soft water supplied via nice lead pipes.

Had hot water heaters in our bathrooms that routinely 'exploded'.

Had great fun X-Raying our own feet outside shoe shops.

Were given watches as presents that glowed in the dark from Curium.

Were given metallic mercury and cyanide compounds to play with.

That's before we come to the enriched uranium...

We could play in the street, main roads including.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls

My sister and I in our parents' garden and with tennis racquets hit baby apples over the roof of the house into the street beyond. No vehicles were hurt; at least i don't think so. :)

Sometimes my friends and I would play baseball on the common near the horse chestnut trees; we'd take turns for who could hit a conker the furthest over the North Circular Road (West London).

Having just watched the olympics as kids, my brother and I fancied playing shot putt
We found a suitably heavy chunk of stone and started "humping" it up our shared driveway
He suddenly got the hang of it, and boy did it fly, very unexpectedly straight through next doors window
It was the one by the front door that had wire mesh in it, straight through, no bother
No pocket money for quite a few weeks

Thanks sd.....
I laughed like crazy
I think brother was worried what would happen when Dad came home from work
Not that he EVER hit us, but he could be scary, if we deserved it
A few footballs went through windows as well
but that was all part of growing up in those days

My dad's lawyer was visiting....
It was a freezing cold day but we'd been sent outside for to give the "grown ups" peace

I threw the "bladder" (i.e. leather football) in the air to give it a good big punt
- wee brother at that exact moment draws blood in my right wrist with his teeth (he thought.. wrongly... that it was his turn with the ball)
I pivot a bit - and send the ball in the "wrong" direction (it's sky bound and over my head toward the house)
- and simultaneously break both the skylight (with football) and my brother's nose (with my shin)

It was their fault for sending us outside in such shitty weather

Family though... mental and painful and wouldn't have it any other way

I did that, but in next door's garden, not ours. In my defence, it was their son who suggested that a golf ball would be better than a tennis ball. And faster too.

So I won the toss, and I duly batted first. It was a short match, with only one ball delivered. Best batting stroke you ever did see. As it shattered the window, it missed the budgie's cage by two inches. The budgie never quite conquered the post-traumatic shock. :|
