The child in me prompted me to ask,

Back came the unadorned answer:

I was laughing my socks off at this, but since then there have been other replies:-

made a really yummy cake for her dog's bd. My dogs loved it.
followed by another that basically said, I can give you my doggy cake recipe or I can make it/them for the cost of materials!
I dabble in cake making and would happily try a design if you have something in mind!

I'm not trying to antagonise dog lovers, but the whole thing seems just to be a huge joke to me.

Dogs don't have birth certificates. Many have honorary birthdays arbitrarily ascribed by their humans, who don't know the real date.

Doggy ice cream, doggy beer, even doggy prosecco are all available. After all, you wouldn't want Rover to feel he's missing out at the human picnic, would you?

I can quite believe it too. I've seen "doggy ice cream" in shops so why not birthday cake?
I also follow quite a few people on Instagram, and the girls on there are crazy about their dogs and cats. "I've only had you for two months, but I can't conceive of life without you".

Or xxx's first walk today (followed by video) Or xxxx meets Auntie this or Uncle that. Or she looks so lovely when she's asleep! And naturally lots of pets being cradled like babies and endless videos of clever tricks of the child. I mean pet.

Empathy should not be underestimated: it's a great human quality, not an indication of being thick.

The odd thing to me is that we love animals, dote on them evem, but we are quite happy to eat them too.

If only we would harness this empathy to pour more effort into respect for the natural world.

My last dog's official date as far as i am concerned was her first injection date. The only date of hers I commemorate, more of a remember than anything, is the day and time she died in 2007.

The (human) breeder whose puppy (we have named Molly) we shall be getting very shortly has told me the puppy's birth date. Mrs Bnc is not so minded but were it up to me I would get the puppy's astrological chart done. I shall be careful how I tell Mrs Bnc about this thread in case she insists upon birthday cakes for Molly.

Mrs Bnc and I are also vegetarian, me for the last 36 years. We are not intending to feed our imminent puppy vegetarian food or vegan for that matter but we shall be feeding her organic dog food containing no artificial additives and preservatives. If we were not vegetarian then we could share our meat, poultry, game and fish with Molly because feeding dogs on raw food is the best way to help keep them healthy.

i would have to buy the raw meat, etc, rather than expect Molly to hunt for herself. There is a sign on the main road nearby to watch out for deer but I've yet to see any.

If you fancy posting a useful answer there's a shop in Broadway in the Cotswolds which sells an incredible range of doggy treats, I'd be amazed if they didn't do both birthday cakes and wedding cakes or they would probably do them to order if asked!
