Another blonde

#467696

Postby laladonny » December 21st, 2021, 1:04 am

The blonde asked if I'd check her oil, as she knows I am a car nut.
After checking, I told her she was 3 quarts low!
She replied, "Don't I have 2 left?"
I said "Yes, but..."
She interjected with "I just wait for the oil light to come on, that is what its for!"

And she also votes.

Oh dear. I don't have blond hair and that's how I usually do it too. Been driving since 1976 and have only had two engines seize ;) (Both Toyotas funnily enough). C.

Of course modern cars have an oil level light, as well as the old oil pressure light.

Surely oil is always level. It's a liquid

That reminds me, I need to go into Halford's tomorrow to get a longer dipstick; the one I've got doesn't reach.

Any Laphroaig in your glass is too much..... it needs consuming immediately in case some of it evaporates. Of course, you then have an empty glass, so it will need refilling.......

Yeah, it's taking up space where the Ardbeg should be.

(for the record, I love both those tipples)

I mean..I too thought that was the point of the oil light. I pay a garage to service it and they top it up or change it. I don't think I have ever checked the oil level otherwise. Except when the light comes on, whereupon it turns out that the oil is fine, and the light is faulty.

Well back in the day when cars were real pieces of engineering instead of pieces of software on wheels, and the driver needed to be capable of changing a wheel or rebuilding a gearbox kerbside, the oil light was a "Low oil pressure warning light", not an oil level warning light. If it came on, it basically meant the oil pressure had gone walkabout and your engine was about to seize with so much internal damage it was about to become no more use than a lump of scrap iron. So the oil pressure light coming on was a seriously big deal requiring the engine to be turned off IMMEDIATELY. All 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s drivers needed to know this and the handbook that came with the car usually said something like "Check oil level and tyre pressures daily or before every trip". as in those days there were no active oil level or tyre pressure monitors.

Many moons later, perhaps 25 years ago, this "oil light" morphed into an "Oil level warning light", so now performed the original function of the dipstick and making the dipstick redundant, except as a mechanical check to see if the oil level warning light is telling the truth if it comes ON. So now the 'oil light' just warns you the oil level is low and needs topping up. Fine, unless one gets into a older or vintage car with an oil pressure warning light on and treats it like an oil level warning light, as a wrecked engine will result.

The odd thing is, low oil pressure can be caused by failures other than low oil level but I don't think modern vehicles even have a low oil pressure warning light. I must ask Tony, my mechanic....
