Americans rarely elect intellectuals to the highest office. There is a suspicion about academics and intellectuals that resonates there (as it does here although maybe not as much). That said, he attended Yale.

So never misunderestimate those who eschew a classical education but demonstrate an appealing folksy charm and a dandy sense of whimsy. Is our children learning?
