I was given a recording of that about 35 years ago, but I've no idea of the background either.
It really is excellent, he has a wonderful speaking voice and doesn't need shock or rudeness to be funny. Too often speakers rely on pushing boundaries to be funny, it's almost more shock than humour, and this guy proves there's a better way.
