One of my absolute favourite routines ever; I think I linked to it on another recent thread. The timing and language and delivery are perfect.

Just remind Johnny Foreigner that until 1776 - a mere clock-tick for English chaps some of whose families have lived in the same places since the Dark Ages – we owned their country.
And we want our wet tea back.

Should that perhaps be on the Imperial Units thread?

You have reminded me of the days when I used to eat at the "Cheers" bar in Detroit Airport, rather than take the meal that Northwest offered en route to Gatwick. I used to have one of their "Norm size" glasses of beer (usually Sam Adams) but can't recall how big they were. I suspect 32ozs.

Of course you could have really confused your American colleague by telling them you would meet them on the first floor.

Just heard an American on a TV show confused at what time "a quarter past 7" was.

She interpreted it as 7.25.

Can anyone guess her rationale?

Cos if u don't do math then "a quarter" just means 25c?

Correct. She explained her rationale in the show...she was a bit slow.

Slightly related -

I use "mid-day" to mean 12 noon exactly. Recently someone took this to mean "some time approximately in the middle of the day".

Mental!
Surely that's the "back of 11"?

Over the last few years I've sold lots of things via online websites and offered them as collect only. My experience of people generally is that most of them can't tell the time. Here is just one example......If we make arrangement for them to collect between 10 - 11am they often turn up at 12 without any offer of apology or explanation. Don't let the wearing of a watch con you into believing the wearer can tell the time.

Like anything, it is a breeze once you get used to it. Call a US pint 16 fluid ounces rather than 20

Except US floz are different to imperial ones, albeit not by much, they're about 4% bigger.

And it gets weirder in the other colonies - some parts of Canada have 18floz pints which I think is an approximation to 500ml as well as 20floz and 16floz depending on the extent of US influence, and historically there were all sorts of sizes in Australia, which had different names in different states. My favourite is 5floz being a pony, and in WA a 4floz is a Shetland...

Cant remember the context, but I was recently reading about someone referring to "Florida ounces." Yup, you got it - fl.ozs!
