Awful. Horrible. Disgusting. Unforgiveable. Loathsome. Contemptible. Nauseating. Pathetic.

Mind that apostrophe.

Whenever I have passed this pub, my blood boils and a red mist descends. I cannot express my loathing for this travesty of a name - see if you understand why...

Perhaps it is a shy horse rather than a Shire horse? Or as well as ? It could be a shier* horse than the other Shire horses

* not to be confused with a shyer, which is a horse that shies consistently

Is it any sillier than a pub called The Green Man, with a sign outside depicting a martian and a flying saucer?

There's a pub in Bath called the King William, which once rejoiced in a less salubrious reputation than might be suggested by its current association with our future monarch. ;) When I first arrived around these parts, this sinkhole of humanity was known to one and all as the King Willy. As evidenced by the enormous wooden phallus which graced the main bar for probably twenty years.

No, it didn't get many tourists, apart from an adventurous few who sought it out in the hope of being enrolled in its private members' club.

That's an 'interesting' use of verb tenses... ;-)

Presumably the descending red mist is caused by the boiled blood condensing....

Looks rather diffident, not to mention bashful, in the picture.

I'd be shy, if I was (were?) such an obvious misnomer.

My youngest brother, called George, once owned a pub in Yately called the George and Dragon. In a frivolous mood he had a new sign made for it picturing a small man with a flat cap cowering from his large wife who was wielding a rolling pin. It made the daily newspapers and annoyed a few of the locals. He’s long since moved on and so too I dare say his sign.
