Added cost and no demand, perhaps?

My main gripe with the radio/cassette player in one car I owned was that you couldn't eject the cassette when in third gear!

That sounds like a brilliant first sentence in a short story. "It's a fair cop guv, but..."

For me most BBC telly is a victim of cost cutting. No sport (sorry bowls and snooker don't count). Endless repeats every day. Tired and thread bare quizes - Alexander Armstrong - yes we now know how knowledgable you are but you are indeed pointless.

The BBC still comes up with the occasional gem, not as regularly as in the past but again that's down to budget restraints. BBC4 has it's moments and the BBC Iplayer is great value. The minor channels also offer variety.

The BBC will pay enormous fees to retain people they consider essential. A mistake I think. Why they are so desperate to retain the likes of Lineker, Balding, Alexander Armstrong and indeed Huw Edwards, when they are countless people who could excel in the job for far less cash. They could learn from C4 who famously decided Carol Vordeman was no longer cost effective and employed a very young Rachel Riley, after CV resigned rather than take the cut in salary she was offered.

The Radio offerings from the BBC are simply outstanding. Such a choice and the archives easily available. What other corporation comes anywhere close?

The World Service has been an asset to the country but with all BBC stations on the Internet, perhaps less so these days.

The website is rather good too.

All in all the BBC is great value.

My biggest disappointment is in the decline of David Attennorough's work into what amounts to climate preaching, over and over and over.

Imagine what he should be producing with the advancement of 8K slomo video and other aerial and subsea tech....very, very disappointing.

It is even more galling when at the peak of his nature media was only produced in 1080p resolution which is way below what 4K/8K panels can handle today.

He does rather seem to know what he's talking about though; unlike his detractors

I expect he has revisited a goodly number of areas formerly rich in wildlife to find them bare, due to the excessive human population. Yoof has no idea what we have lost, their baseline is now, but he remembers how it was.
He is a patron of Population Matters, and I expect he would like to do a good deal more 'preaching'.

Regards the Beeb, we listen to R3, R4. The absence of ads alone is worth the licence fee, which we don't pay as we have not had a telly since 2011. On R4, it's interesting now hearing the lefties beginning to realise what they have elected.

Hardly surprising the needle is stuck and he's on auto repeat - he's 98 years old. I gave up watching him a few years ago, found it all rather irritating but maybe I'm a grumpy old man too :D

I've got a book somewhere from when he went proper exploring as a youngster "Zoo quest for a Dragon" - I think it was a BBC thing from the 50s.
I really get the impression he's about as far from an ill informed armchair general in these matters as you could possibly find; like a Feynman for furry things

"lefties" ?

Oh dear.

the idea that Starmer and Co. represents "the left" is laughable.

There's left and there's left.
I suspect we will find that Starmer is more left than many people think.

I could be mistaken here but I took 88V8 not to be saying that Starmer is a leftie, but rather that those complaining about him from within Labour are. So the opposite - that Starmer is Tory-lite and so not a true leftie.

I do see your point.

but Id have to say anybody that is of a leftist persuasion must have been very certain exactly what Starmer was not.

then again, we are talking about the UK electorate here...
