I wold imagine the need to transport it from the place of purchase to home has to be a good reason. It does seem though that "A court will decide if you’ve got a good reason to carry a knife or a weapon if you’re charged with carrying it illegally." - so indeed it does seem that anybody with arrest powers actually sees the logic in being able to take it home, and/or the CPS seeing that such a requirement is not in the public interest to not recognise.
Of course, there is always the one that slips though the net with a mixture of over jealous officer of the law and brain dead CPS and counsel. And understandably nobody really wants to jump though those hoops!
