By NHS policy I suspect they mean NHS local policy. For about 18 months, the local NHS Trust stopped the pharmacies automatically ordering repeat prescriptions, instead patients had to do it themselves via a patient access website or otherwise. Now they've more or less gone back to the previous system. You get a text message notification when the items are ready to collect, so no wasted journeys.

I am old enough to remember the days when our local doc always carried a prescription pad with him and it was not unusual to see him handing out a prescription or two in the local pub. This was in the days when we had a local doc, alas we have to travel several miles now to visit the surgery though in all fairness because we do live a fair distance away they always have our prescriptions ready for us, we can pick up our repeat prescription any day during the first week of the month.

Fortunately, it's still like that in Italy. I really couldn't be [expletive deleted] to make an appointment and take an hour off work just for a repeat prescription. A scientist colleague of my wife is also a medical doctor, so I asked her. No problem. She just wrote it out there and then.

I haven't seen how far I can push it, but in any case, I don't think our medical insurance would accept 'Johnny Walker, 200ml, taken twice daily' ;)
