Searching....
If I make a mistake in my search and try again, why do i get this?
"Sorry but you cannot use search at this time. Please try again in 13 seconds."
Bloody annoying, and supremely pointless. Huh.

It's to stop you, or a bot impersonating Mike, from spamming the site and slowing everthing else down.
Yeah it can be annoying
<checks board\>
But it's not as pointless as sticking "Huh" on the end of a post.
What even is that? ... a rhetorical shrug; erotesis for emphasis?
- or more likely a termination intended to turn the phrase from a simple complaint into an anacoenosis (given the board and the likelihood of a sympathetic reader)
..and I walked right in to it by agreeing with you - damn!

I know I'm just a feek plummer, but I'm struggling with this.
How does stopping me searching for 13 seconds prevent me from posting all the spam I'm itching to post on TLF? And how would me posting a bit of spam here and there slow the site down?
Just curious.....
And how does it know I'm a bot??!

I hope if you are a bot you didn't tick the "I'm not a bot" bit
- that appears to be our standard defence against the things (take that artificial intelligence!)

It prevents you, or a bot, from posting for a length of time, so that the total amount of traffic at any time is reduced. A legitimate poster might be inconvenienced for a few seconds, but the entirety of users get a benefit. If you know of a way to better identify genuine users from bots that have the capability to send thousands of posts a second I'm sure the industry would welcome your insight. (Although lets not let the bot industry know in case they use that knowledge to circumvent it).

And there's another thing. What if I AM a bot? There is no box for me to tick.
I feel discriminated against.

Re: Searching....
This might be total rubbish, but I seem to recall reading that asking a site to do a search uses a fair amount of server resources. Therefore anyone trying to cause problems could set up frequent and or multiple searches to slow down a site, unless measures are put in place to limit these searches, such as insisting on a gap of say 60 seconds between searches.
I've seen it on other sites, but it seems to me to be the exception rather than the rule.

FK! Leaving off that "not a bot" box is how Skynet went live in the Terminator movies... I think
