Really?
Here is a recipe for Welsh rarebit, which is traditionally served on toast.
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/welsh-rarebit
Note that it contains beer.

There is a German breakfast soup made with beer.
https://www.readersdigest.co.uk/food-dr ... -beer-soup
If you scroll down there is a recipe to try.

I do wonder if refrigeration and COLD beer might be what is putting people off.

Well, one can find anything... all I'm saying is that it's not my cup of tea  - and I've not come across this particular phenomenon of beer and toast or beer at breakfast. Clearly, I have not got to know enough Welsh or German people - or at least I have known a few but made the mistake of not asking them about beer in the morning.

PS I've seem many Germans having breakfast, but none having beer with breakfast.

Scott.

The area around Smithfield market in London was famous for pubs with early licences but there's only 2-3 left now I think. That wasn't about "breakfast" drinking, but the right of the working man to have a pint after doing a full shift of physical labour.

As far as Spoons go, the licence will specify when they can sell alcohol, but I'm sure they have the data that tells them that it's not really worth them selling alcohol before 9. One underappreciated aspect is that it means that they don't need a personal licence holder on site, which would give them a bit more flexibility on the staff rota for the opening shift.

in my late teens very early in the morning I went Smithfield market as a meat buyer, several times and saw many pubs open at the crack of dawn.
Didn't fancy a beer then either, couldn't wait to get back to our butchers shop and slap a nice fresh steak on the grill.

Billingsgate too. The father and son next door to me growing up would get home from working there in the late morning, and had obviously had a few.

My own thoughts entirely. Why would anyone want to drink beer at that time of day, and it really doesn't go with breakfast.

Night workers? Whose 10pm-6am shift and a pint at 8am is no different to somebody else working 0900-1700 and a pint at 1900 ?

Ive seen plenty of Germans drinking schnapps with a bratwurst from an Imbiss at 0600 waiting for their bus to work.

Indeed. There seems to be a good market for Jagermeister with your papers in the banhof

Is that so you don't get pubes stuck in your teeth?

I would get a bit worried if I found pubes in my beer.

In France, some men stop off on their way to work for a coffee and cognac.

In Italy, it's the 'cafe corretto', an espresso with grappa added.

Both absolutely delicious, but personally, I just can't take alcohol until at least 4pm, and definitely not that early! It makes me too sleepy.

Steve

PS Although I dimly remember that on my bucket list was one day to put champagne on my cornflakes. 8-)

I was in Wetherspoon's again this morning and thought I would try a "lower cancer risk" breakfast so I went for their vegetarian option to go with my pint of Bishop Nick Mitre.

The only "non-standard" items were the vegetarian sausages. The sausages had a somewhat smoother texture, somewhere between a pork sausage and pâté. The flavour made me think of cardboard — I felt it needed spicing up with something. I think I will throw caution to the wind next time and go back to pork sausages and bacon. At least, the butter for the toast was real.

And in Italy at least not only on the way to work. I’ve always been intrigued that it seemed common in meetings there for groups to wander off-site mid-morning to a local (enhanced!) coffee shop for a blether. I’m sure most U.K. employers would be more than surprised.
