This Will Drive You Nuts

Two and a half minutes of your life that you'll never get back.

I found this spell binding and thought it would be of interest. You will have no idea where this is leading. None.

...Err.

Sorry to disappoint you but, when I saw how it would operate, it did cross my mind to think of what it could be used for. The two thoughts that crossed my mind both involved the same 'n' word.

Well I must say, being the most impractical person in the world, I found it highly amusing.

Two things.

1) You gave it away with the thread title. It was obviously gonna be something to do with nuts!

2) The device is badly flawed in that it not only cracks the nut but crushes the kernel (which you don't want crushed) too. A more sophisticated device would feel for the size of the nut on the first cycle, then crack the shell only on the second cycle, by moving in perhaps 1/8" more than on the calibration stroke. Some sort of ratchet positioning the anvil side would perhaps do the trick....

A ratchet that starts with a 1/8” throw, then progressively reduces (to cope with nuts of various sizes).

I did work out what it was, probably due to the givaway title. It is adjustable by screwing the anvil in and out.

It could be made self-calibrating by making the anvil spring-loaded but with a mechanism to lock it into place when the piston was, say, 1/8" from the end of its stroke. Alternatively, the piston mechanism itself could incorporate this feature. The piston would really need a longer stroke though.

I have no plans to replicate this project at present.

Julian,

I couldn't replicate that kind of work. It looked amazing to me, despite any "minor flaws" :) .

Next time I find a little ditty like this I send it to the Fool design team to see if it passes muster, before posting - we need to have some appreciation of what we're appreciating
