It may be of interest that at the period of extreme Eastern Elongation of Venus that , in the absence of moonlight , the shadow of the lintel of the Great Trilithon would be cast to the centre where the Altar Stone is believed to have stood. I suppose they could have worded it as from "a location in what is currently called Scotland" - but that seems weird

No, they used the ancient alien unit of the kilom, which due to fluctuations in the fabric of space time varied in length between summer and winter. Since their surveyors were not blessed with intergalactic space brains, the French chose to standardise on the summer version, hence the kilom été.
