Re: Mystery Items No. 5
No 4 is an LED I think (different lead length to denote anode/cathode- or possibly a photodiode? Maybe an IR receiver/transmitter

Itsallaguess wrote:I'm going to have a stab at No.1, as I think they might be some sort of spacers or clamps for PC motherboard components and given that there's four of them in the picture then they may even be CPU cooler clamps?
They are CPU heatsink/cooler clamps. They are for LGA775 CPUs such as the Intel Core 2 series.
No. 2 is an 8A jelly crimp.
No. 3 is a deburrer.

Itsallaguess wrote:Can I have a go at No.4, which I think is a Light Emitting Diode (LED)...
If that's correct, then the major clue for me was the two plastic domes on either side, which I think are designed to focus the LED light towards the viewer...

It is an LED but why is there a dome (lens) both sides? It has a very specific use.
5.
6. Not a microphone and not an IR receiver.

servodude wrote:- adhesive fabric tape for wrapping wires in a loom - dunno what it would be called
It is indeed wiring loom (or wiring harness) tape. It is a self-adhesive cloth tape used for wrapping wiring looms in vehicles. I have seen it referred to as "Tesa tape" (which this is, the name is printed on the inside of the core, hence, I photoshopped it out), however, Tesa manufacture a range of different types of tape.

servodude wrote:8. was convinced it was a sprung spindle for toilet roll - but from the size it's probably a chair piston?
It is either the sprung spindle for a toilet roll holder designed for people with extremely large bottoms or it is a chair piston.
Actually, it is a chair gas lift piston. These are available in a range of different lengths and are mostly otherwise standard. If the one on your chair fails, you can probably buy a standard, off-the-shelf replacement and it will fit.
When you operate the lever under the chair, it pushes on the button that you can see on the far left of the photo. This allows the extension of the piston to be adjusted.
9. It is not for a roller blind. The winders for roller blinds are usually quite simple and consist of little more than a pulley attached to a spigot that pushes into the end of the roller, and a guide that looks similar to the right-hand side of the object in the photo. It is not for a Venetian blind but you are getting close.

Not a frame fixing. The middle bit does screw in though.

Damn, I was studiously ignoring this thread. Now I've gone and read it.
5 looks to me like a modern LED strip. The kind of thing you put on the bottom of your kitchen wall cupboards to cast light on your worktops.

It is not an LED strip. It is actually quite thin (thinner than an LED strip).

I can't work out why you'd need a double-faced LED
Does it fit inside something for position sensing?

I think it’s for a vertical blind and it causes the individual slats to rotate when you pull on the chain of “linked ball bearings” or similar that would hang from the RH end

It is not for a vertical blind but keep thinking along those lines. It contains a planetary gearbox; the ball chain gear has to turn four times for each rotation of the square socket.

It is not for tracing. It is not moved (like a mouse) when it is in use.

Not an interlock. It is relevant that it is double-sided. There would have been one of these in most homes.

Think back to a previous guess,

You may not know that it exists. If you keep guessing, I will leave more clues.
Most households had one.

4. The LED:
This radiates in two directions and is used with two photodiodes.
5. This is a thick paper tape with two metal strips on one side.
6. The grey thing with a USB plug:
Make a few more guesses and I will drop some clues.
9. The ball chain operated gearbox:
You are very close with this one.
10. The long thing:
Make a few more guesses and I will drop some clues.

So it's not a Star Wars laser turret?

The LED...household
Well, fridges and tumble driers have mechanical light/power switches (and it's not an interlock anyway)
Not anywhere hot (oven , toaster) I assume
Washing machine drum speed?
is the thick tape for wiring up a NC burglar alarm circuit on glass? Or maybe it's a slug fence - 1kV between the strips, wrap it round yer raised beds...

Past tense indicates obsolete technology. Households would seem to contrast with individuals. Something like video recorders or 'phone answering machines that's been superseded - if indeed "most" applies to either of those.

Not any of those. Try a different room.

It is not for burglar alarms or anything similar. The paper would go soggy outside. It might zap the slugs (until it went soggy) but may pose a risk to other creatures such as hedgehogs.
The crystalline structure on the surface is where the metal strips have been galvanised.
