I have edited out some of the markings on item no. 4. What do you think it is?

It is not a theodolite or any other form of surveying instrument.

Some kind of light meter for photography? Not a bog standard one though.

Oh good grief, one I know straight off for once! I think, IIRC, that I even know the make (unless it's a clone).

Spoiler: Pentax Spot meter

Correct so far.

mc2fool is spot on!

As used by Ansel Adams. There is a review here, https://www.outsidetheshot.com/pentax-spotmeter-v-review/.

LOL, the review claims: "The Pentax Spotmeter V was used by Ansel Adams when he was developing the zone metering system." Beh!

"The Zone System is a photographic technique for determining optimal film exposure and development, formulated by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer.[1] Adams described the Zone System as "[...] not an invention of mine; it is a codification of the principles of sensitometry, worked out by Fred Archer and myself at the Art Center School in Los Angeles, around 1939–40."" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zone_System

"Pentax Spotmeter V
• Silicium cell
• Introduced 1975/76

:D

My work photo club used to have one some 40 odd years ago, which is why I recognised it....

It must have been a pre-production sample!
