So you think the market share numbers for ICE and non-ICE are wrong, or that the majority of people are deliberately buying something (ICE) they don't want?

Your response instead seems to be saying those minority of car buyers that choose a non-ICE product are happy with their choice. That may well be true (I don't know). But that isn't the same logical statement as non-ICE buyers are "most customers", as you referred to above, in the market for cars.

If you are a drinks manufacturer and more people buy beer than wine, you can legitimately solely produce and sell wine successfully, and ignore beer. You can't really though make the claim most customers don't want beer.

The are not that many BEV available for consumers to buy, but the rate of growth of sales of BEV compared to the rate of decline of sales of pure ICE engines especially diesels tells what the inherent consumer interests are.

Rate of growth from near zero is bound to be high. Have you noticed that the prices of used ICE cars has been rising? For many people a BEV is an impracticable choice

To be fair while Ody's logic is characteristically novel, he isn't the only one using inappropriate data to support his assertion. It is quite possible for a majority of people to want a BEV whilst a majority of people buy ICE for any number of reasons including affordability, state of current infrastructure, and rather importantly since demand for both BEV's and ICE's currently far outstrip supply, availability. At the moment you take what the car companies are prepared to sell you (and wait) and like it, or you wait (longer). Whether excess desire for BEV's is transmuted in to ICE sales or unfulfilled orders it isn't showing up in the new registration statistics.

The price of everything is rising.

For one of the few times in history, popular recent model used cars are selling for more than what the owner paid when it was new.

SAN FRANCISCO/WASHINGTON, Dec 6 (Reuters) - The U.S. securities regulator has opened an investigation into Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) over a whistleblower complaint that the company failed to properly notify its shareholders and the public of fire risks associated with solar panel system defects over several years, according to a letter from the agency.

The probe raises regulatory pressure on the world's most valuable automaker, which already faces a federal safety probe into accidents involving its driver assistant systems. Concerns about fires from Tesla solar systems have been published previously, but this is the first report of investigation by the securities regulator.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission disclosed the Tesla probe in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by Steven Henkes, a former Tesla field quality manager, who filed a whistleblower complaint on the solar systems in 2019 and asked the agency for information about the report.

"We have confirmed with Division of Enforcement staff that the investigation from which you seek records is still active and ongoing," the SEC said in a Sept. 24 response to Henkes, declining his request to provide its records. The SEC official said the letter should not be taken as an indication by the agency that violations of law had occurred. Reuters independently confirmed the SEC letter was legitimate.

Interesting, as this suggests they will likely market this as believing robotic driving will work.

Having seen more 10.5 and some 10.6 of the Tesla system, it all looks imho more like it will work than ever before.

Regards,

I see that in 1978 I sold a car, bought from my employer 18 months previously, for about 50% more than I paid for it.

Most of my cars have been held for far longer periods, so that was the only one.

Nice work!

That era was also one of high inflation like we have now, when buying things was better than money in the bank as the price of stuff went up while the value of savings and pensions save for those with index linked benefits (Civil Service) was eroded.

Then it was all blamed on the rise in the price of oil following the actions of the oil producing nations (OPEC) and that made some sense. Now it is blamed on almost everything with few of the explanations making sense and imho is artificial world government action to deliberately raise inflation to eat away at the value of government debt.

This is a bad situation for many, but for Tesla with new plants and legacy auto having to re-tool at todays inflated prices it is a blessing which I did not expect but which adds imho to the bullish case for Tesla although I have seen no analyst making this point. Tesla has been relentlessly raising prices but with many of their costs paid for in their new factories it must add to margin, although delays by the German authorities to Giga Berlin are no doubt an expensive vexation to Tesla, shareholders and the reputation of Germany.

One advantage of a Tesla I observed this week (although in a distressing situation). A local resident had their Tesla window smashed and stuff stolen from inside the car. The Tesla cameras took pictures of the thief which have been published locally and supplied to the police.

It was rather odd viewing the photos. The smartly dressed thief must have been completely unaware he was being recorded. The car took clear pictures of him standing next to it and even one of him pulling stuff out of the car.

It is kind of interesting how cameras in Tesla seem to be able to give good resolution images whereas much of the CCD camera footage I see makes it near impossible to determine the identity of the person photographed. It may be that it is just an inverse square effect, the thief in this case being closer to the cameras that gave a better image of him. Of course it is easy for a thief to disguise themselves and there are electronic disguises that change how a persons face looks at the click of a button via led placed on the person's body and/or clothing.

One can argue that all of this surveillance is a huge blessing for catching thieves but it has civil liberty implications and it is possible to fake evidence or destroy images that are inconvenient. Whether the Downing street parties happened or not could almost certainly be determined by logs of who was in Downing street at the time and also by recorded images, but it seems that only a high ranking civil servant and his/her team may see the logs/images and cynics might suspect that any images released will be of such poor quality that no one can determine who was being photographed.

Still the more Tesla thief activity is broadcast the more thieves are likely to target other makes of car that do not have such tech built in, doing nothing to hurt demand for Tesla cars.

Interesting video, (over 12 minutes) on the cost of fossil fuels and what would be needed to reduce global warming:

https://youtu.be/HpCAmGtvmeU

One of the clear issues is that if the politicians do decide to have carbon taxes that make diesel and petrol unaffordable to many then there are not enough electric cars to buy even if all the folk who want them have enough money to buy 1.

We need more batteries or an alternative technology.

The video was good!

I've just read in the online version of the local paper that the thief was identified by the police, arrested and appeared before magistrates this morning.

Model 3 Police car well received in its trials:

https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3 ... ng-review/

Kind of interesting that there were not serious drawbacks to its range even with blue lights going, nor excessive stops to charge. Based on the wear on the brakes and tyres it seems to have been driven very aggressively. No services have been required.

He deserves it. He's pushing the state of the art in different engineering technologies forwards to a degree that only a very few in history have achieved.
