Anybody who buys a car because it has the lowest pollution footprint buys a VW ID or group equivalent.

Where did Musk claim Tesla were sold out Q2 at a shareholder meeting?

The claim was attributed to an anonymous source.

Musk said demand was off the scale and that the 3 had replaced the BMW in its market segment as the most popular car.

Ha Ha, In your dreams.

Many folk won't buy VW on principle after Dieselgate, others won't buy a 20th century car dumbed to be a transition between an ICE and a BEV.

Any BEV has a dramatically lower pollution footprint if the electricity used to power it is from renewable sources. A VW or other BEV powered from coal generated electric ain't going to be clean.

Circumstantial counter information suggests that Tesla sales in China were down in April. There is some confusion about the home sales figures vs exports which should become clearer soon. And there are rumours of a temporary plant closure.

Reuters isn't very cheerful about Tesla's China performance.

"Tesla puts brake on Shanghai land buy as U.S.-China tensions weigh".

"U.S. electric car maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) has halted plans to buy land to expand its Shanghai plant and make it a global export hub, people familiar with the matter said, due to uncertainty created byU.S.-China tensions."

Whilst delivery quotes are short at the moment, demand may, of course, exceed supply if there are plant closures which haven't been disclosed yet?

The article reads like a journalist looking for a story and bashing Tesla is currently job of the day for the media as the share price along with many things in the Nasdaq continue to correct.

Perhaps Ballie Gifford will be rushing in to buy back some of the stock they sold at higher prices.

Electrek are explaining the reasons for Tesla's sales in China dropping month on month and pointing out that more cars are now being exported.

Most of the articles are based on a report by China’s Global Times, a media publication control by the government, which reported that “Embattled Tesla sees sales drop 27% in April from March in China market.”

They claimed that Tesla sales went down by 27% in April from March, and they linked it to Tesla receiving bad press in China recently"

One reason is the temporary Model Y plant closure but the fact that the Global Times is said to be controlled by the Chinese Government may be significant.

Elon can upset Reuters with impunity but he needs to be sensitive when dealing with the Chinese Government, oh! and the German authorities. Just like any other legacy car manufacturer. ;)

Electrek are enthusiastic but possibly incorrect in their defence of Tesla's China April figures. Moneyball, generally reputed to be a a reliable source by all sides is saying that Chinese media are reporting CPCA figures for Tesla's Chinese figures already include exports.

Tesla GF3 exported units are already included in Tesla MIC Apr sales, #China media citing CPCA source.

On the other hand 11,671 is also exactly the figure given for March exports, so things are a bit of a mess. Still we are in US business hours, so I'm sure Tesla's press department will be issuing a clarification soon.

One irreverent thought - if Tesla is (or rather, aspires to be) to self-driving BEV what Apple is to consumer tech, what happens when Apple start making cars?

Car sales in major markets last year were 65 million:

https://www.best-selling-cars.com/inter ... car-sales/

If Tesla reached its most optimistic 20 million per year (10 million by 2030 is perhaps more practical), that still leaves over 45 million others needed, unless folk stop wanting to own a car due to low cost robo-taxi.

WSJ has committed to 11,671 Chinese sales in April.

SHANGHAI— Tesla Inc. exported most of the cars produced at its Shanghai factory in April, raising questions about the strength of demand for its electric vehicles in China after a run of adverse publicity.

The EV maker sold 11,671 locally built Model 3 and Model Y cars in China last month, while exporting a further 14,174, according to the China Passenger Car Association. The association confirmed Wednesday that a wholesale figure of 25,845 published the day before combined local sales and exports. It was the first time it broke down the sales that way.

South China Morning Post appears to be sticking with 25,845 deliveries

Tesla’s sales in mainland China hit a blip last month as the leader in the electric vehicle (EV) field ran foul of angry customers raising concerns about safety and quality.
The US carmaker delivered 25,845 Shanghai-made vehicles in April, 27.2 per cent less than the 35,478 units it sold a month earlier, according to the latest data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). The industry consortium did not break down the sales into the two different models Tesla offers.
“A decline of nearly 10,000 units in sales over just one month is a huge setback for a carmaker,” said Gao Shen, an independent analyst in Shanghai. “But Tesla will maintain its leading position in China’s premium electric vehicle segment for a long time because it has yet to see a powerful rival here.”

Tesla's no comment department is burning through overtime and has put in for funding to increase staff numbers.

What a way to run a business!!!

Super interesting interview between Munro and Jagdeep Singh ,founder and CEO of Quantum Scape who believe they have solved all the chemistry issues of solid state batteries and now the challenge is to produce the cells at scale, something that they believe will take a few years. They have a ongoing, but not binding, agreement with VW to build a solid state battery plant (video 1hr 3 mins):

https://youtu.be/OKFiQIMyF-A

Jagdeep comes over as a sincere and competent CEO and admits that being skeptical until they show mass production is a reasonable position, but if they deliver the price of the stock will be a lot higher.
