God forbid somebody accurately report registration figures in Tesla's home market...

The report released on Wednesday showed registrations in California, a bellwether market for the electric-car maker, plummeted 46.5% to 13,584 in the quarter ended December 2019, from 25,402 in the same period a year earlier.

...as they would have done last year, when Tesla was also engaged in a last minute dash to ship as many cars as possible.

Indeed, and which data did they use? The fourth quarter stats that didn't include late registrations or those that did. Note it says for the same period, rather than from the same time period/dataset.

Lies, damn lies, and statistics.

For clarification are we supposing that there are cars whose registration will be counted in Dec (Q4) which aren't included in the count (incomplete data), or that there were cars sold in December which won't be in the count because their reg won't go through until Jan (conflating registrations which this report is about, with sales, which it isn't)?

There is a great assemble of shorts waiting to be fed with comforting words that Tesla are corrupt & cheating & this latest sales v registration is yet another piece of bait to bring the shorts in & it's worked well, but if there is no down side follow through & the stock rallies lots of shorts are going to get pained.

We have seen this short baiting for years now. Sometimes it works but recently the bait has had a hook in it & many shorts are in trouble trying to get off the line and avoid being grassed by the margin clerks.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Friday it will review a petition asking the agency to formally investigate 500,000 Tesla Inc vehicles over sudden unintended acceleration reports.

The petition covers 2012 through 2019 model year Tesla Model S, 2016 through 2019 Tesla Model X, and 2018 through 2019 Tesla Model 3 vehicles, the agency said. The petition cites “127 consumer complaints to NHTSA involving 123 unique vehicles. The reports include 110 crashes and 52 injuries,” the agency added.

Tesla did not immediately comment Friday.

Tesla driver dies after car bursts into flames in Pleasanton crash

...But the incident didn’t end there. “After the 2018 Tesla Model S was cleared from the scene, the vehicle’s battery reignited and crews were sent to contain the fire,” Pleasanton police wrote in an update on Facebook.

There is no suit, there is an NHTSA investigation. The investigatioon isn't being carried out by a short seller it's being carried out by the NHTSA.

More Chinese EV's:

Chinese car making joint venture FAW-Volkswagen said it planned to launch 29 new vehicle models this year, including six new energy vehicles, as the company looks to continue to outperform in its domestic market.

Last week, Volkswagen Group China reported a 1.7% sales in rise new vehicle sales in China last year to 3.163m units, of which a record 2.13m vehicles were sold by FAW-Volkswagen, while the overall Chinese vehicle market declined by 8.2% to 25.769m units.

I hesitate to post a link to this article given that this successful thread is coming up to 200 pages ;)

Tesla lost market share in the USA in 2019. It lost share to pretty well every premium brand.

Based on the broadly-accepted Insideevs estimates for Tesla’s U.S. unit sales, it grew 0.3% in 2019, to 192,250 units from 191,687 in 2018.

Several other luxury/premium car brands grew faster in the U.S. in 2019, including BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln and Cadillac.

They all grew faster than Tesla both as measured in absolute units and as measured as a percentage.

In other words, even before we adjust for average selling prices - let alone profitability - Tesla lost market share to these competitors in the U.S. market in 2019.

So a question for you.

Given your analysis of automotive sales, why is Tesla's share price still near all time highs?
