In February, X had 27 million daily active users of its mobile app in the U.S., down 18% from a year earlier, according to Sensor Tower, a market intelligence firm based in San Francisco. The U.S. user base has been flat or down every month since November 2022, the first full month of Musk’s owning the app, and in total it’s down 23% since then, Sensor Tower said....

The numbers were nearly as bad worldwide, as daily active users on the mobile app fell to 174 million in February, down 15% from a year earlier, the firm said.....Other social media apps experienced modest increases in their worldwide user bases during the same period, according to the research, with Snapchat growing 8.8%, Instagram 5.3%, Facebook 1.5% and TikTok 0.5%....

Sensor Tower defines a daily active user as someone who “registered a session of at least two seconds in length, once in that day.” It says its data comes from a panel of consumers....

Advertisers have also left X, Sensor Tower said, with 75 out of the top 100 U.S. advertisers on X from October 2022 having ceased ad spending on it. The exodus spiked toward the end of last year, after Musk publicly embraced an antisemitic conspiracy theory and told advertisers at a conference in New York, “Go f--- yourself.”

Who knows who is correct here?

Since X is private they can say what ever they want with out needing to publish accounts & Sensor Tower can’t have the inside numbers so are making deductions.

For now one has to either believe one or the other, both can’t be right.

If X are doing as bad as Sensor Tower suggest then X will have to change or die, but Sensor Tower would simply find other things to opine upon.

The history of Musk companies is one of relentless attacks & certainty by hostile organisations that the business would not survive due to countless reasons, especially competitors.

I clearly don’t have internal numbers, but I see far more twitter stuff for real time news than other platforms, whereas for social interactions Facebook has many more users, Tik Tok seems to lead for short video, but I rarely use either & don’t have time even if I wanted to.

Would I be asking if I did? But intuitively, I always get *really* suspicious when people do something like that, starting a graph at what should be a natural peak or trough. It just makes me assume they're trying to hide something.

Certainly the FT has been doing OK, even if it is more of a digital product than physical newspaper these days :

All the major news papers, including the WSJ, are predominantly accessed on line which is why the information on declining web site visits is important regarding the health of the business.
