Interesting Twitter statement by Nextwave:

- $TSLA purchased $1.5 billion of Bitcoin (45k coins)

- The electricity-related CO2 Emissions from mining that $BTC has the same carbon footprint as putting 890,000 gas powered cars on the road

- Nearly 2x the 500k EVs $TSLA sold in 20’

His calculations are shown in the link below.

Does he have a point?

Assuming Tesla are the buyer, there seems to be a general consensus that this is for the model 2.

It will be interesting to see what comments Tesla make and if them what specs they put out for the 2, in particular what flavour of batteries they intend to use.

[this bit now irrelevant, dspp]

It's difficult to see how a company which often represents itself, and is often represented by its adherents including in this thread, as having the end goal of saving the planet trading in something as unambiguously qnti-environental as BTC isn't in a very real sense a discussion of that company and hence a 'Musk endeavour'.

The interesting thing about mining cryptos and the cost (money and CO2) is as to whether the Tesla FSD computers when not being used to drive could be used for mining crypto or would one need more dedicated hardware?

Either of these is now a potential revenue stream for Tesla and Tesla owners. If the power to charge the Tesla comes from renewable sources, the concerns over the co2 production during mining go away.

If this comes to pass then each Tesla has an income stream available as soon as mining starts and as far as I know none of this is in any of the valuation models.

Won't that be hindered by the fact that they will be out all day earning a living as robo-taxis?

Sure the margins of robotic-taxis will be good and it will be great if robocalls-taxi are in use at all times not being charged, but in practice there will be parked and waiting times that could be used to mine crypto.

If crypto do take off there are opportunities for several manufactures with lots of hardware sales to begin using them for mining. Apple, Microsoft, Google,... This may make it a commodity market that Tesla and other might choose to shun or not depending upon all manner of difficult to know facts.

Of course there have been many screen saver programs that acted as small units of a super computer to tackle scientific questions, so a lot depends upon how well adapted each hardware is to the mining task.

If anyone can shed light on this, please post.

The discussion wasn't about the ethics of crpto it was about the disconnect of a company that markets itself as being founded to save the planet investing in crypto.

Are Tesla’s OTA updates suffering from the type of problems that were alleged to be affecting the VW ID.3?

If one reads the experiences of UK Tesla drivers suffering Tesla’s attempts at OTA software updates one realises that they may actually be a flaw rather than a selling point.

A lot of updates appear to cause software bugs, some quite dangerously affecting windscreen wiper and light malfunctions.

As one UK driver remarked this week, the only useful OTA update in the last 14 months was the addition of Netflix to the infotainment package which might be useful to while away the time wasted at superchargers.

A few more quotes from drivers:

“So, overall, I will say that I wish the last years worth of updates hadn't happened.”

“For me, the failings introduced through software bugs and changes have now annoyed me enough that I'm getting rid of the car.”

“Few updates actually deliver anything tangible, some introduce bugs with the next updates there to fix it.”

“Seems a lot of the car is designed for the US rules and not European. That's either a testing error or a design oversight but either way is detrimental to us over here.”

I’m sure VW ID.3 drivers may find a few bugs in their software, but the Model 3 seems to have repeating flaws.

regards

Howard

More problems are discussed on this link:

PS I don't think the Tesla software could cope with mining unmentionables. ;)

Maybe it would read the sign indicating the restricted space either as a physical sign post or on its sat nav and choose another route.
I see. So an autonomous vehicle wouldn't get into such a pickle because, for example, it would do as the satnav said. Problem solved!

Oh wait...

So what does the banksman do when confronted with an 18 wheeler in that situation without a driver in it?

It sends out a message requesting support causing delays while support comes and deals with the problem.

This happens once and then the route gets into the "don't go there" sin bin and no future robo-devices will take this route.

In general though such things are becoming less likely. I never used to get map warnings that the lane was not suitable for vehicles, but that is now coming up on Google maps, which presumably means that no robotic-vehicle will take this route.

The interesting point here, imho, is the size of SGMW who have come from somewhere below 20th to take the number 1 spot, a fabulous achievement.

This is a remarkable indigenous Chinese story that has recently benefited from a connection with GM:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAIC-GM-Wuling

They are a large manufacturer of micro-vans with one of the founders beginning in 1982, about 20 years before the current business was formed. Currently they are selling over 450,000 micro-vans per year. GM now owns 44%, SIC have a controlling 50.1%.

Baojun is a popular brand, aiming to sell to lower economic classes with prices for some of their products between $5 to $10k they are introducing, what Cathy Wood calls good deflation, i.e. lower consumer prices for added convenience and utility.

The Baojun E300 costs under $10k, has a range of about 175 miles and can charge from flat to full in 1 hour. This 12 minute Fully-Charged review shows a basic car that can take 4 adults but with no storage, rear seats can be folded down for a hatch back like storage:
