How about a stock and collective pick for the coming year? Or several, since I can't be the only one sitting on a lot of uninvested dividends while waiting for Brexit to unravel. This year we have equally or possibly more serious issues to contend with and it is difficult to decide which holdings are most likely to be adversely affected by them. I think I might top up my Polymetal shares for starters and hold off selling those Anglogold Ashanti shares for the time being, gold usually being a relatively safe haven in times of turmoil. Ditto my oil shares and BAe. SMT has done best as regards my few ITs so will add a bit to that as well but I need to decide on another global IT so will watch out for suggestions on here. Otherwise handsitting likely to continue till the dust settles. I hope I won't see all last year's huge gains disappear and intend to spend some of the dividends, knowing they will continue to flow in each month.

The UK market is still cheap by international standards and to that extent it ought to hold up well enough. It might also be bolstered by a takeover or two, but who knows? I certainly do not, but if I were sitting on uninvested dividends which I did not need, I would be investing now. None of us has any idea how Brexit will effect things, nor indeed, Trump's actions against Iran (or for that matter vice versa)

I would also take a look at Alliance Trust. It is shaping up quite well. I have bought back into it again in the last couple of years and last year it had a very respectable 22% increase. Scottish Mortgage managed 24%. In fact despite all the machinations over the last few years, it has not done badly, but appears to have no following around here.

Incidentally, it may well be that I will not be around in another decade but that will not stop me trying!

Well there's optimism for you.

Don't worry if my picks are crap I won't be here neither

If I understood that post correctly, your intended closing date for entries was 6 January 2020.

I see you've been posting elsewhere today, so I can ask if that is the case?

That does not seem to me to be the way to look at the next decade for investing in a single share. I too try to avoid losses but a market dip, even a big one, does not usually last all that long and are a fact of life. Over the next ten years surely you need to go for growth which is why I suggested a big generalist IT. I would expect almost any big generalist to beat CGT over that period.

As part of a portfolio, CGT might have a place, but it depends.

Hi! Long time lurker etc etc. I will also go for Diageo (which is my largest holding by a reasonable distance). Aside from the usual stuff about brands, decent looking margins, cashflow etc. I think it is getting better at using data, which should help it become more efficient in its marketing spend and capital allocation. Seems (like a number of other decent UK companies) to be on quite a valuation discount to American peers. Being one of just a few UK companies held by both Nick Train and Terry Smith is also another tick in the box for me.

I would probably pick Fundsmith. A small concentrated pool of high quality companies, what's not to like?
(maybe Terry Smith's ego, but I will overlook that)

Lemonfool best ideas portfolio has been launched, courtesy of an HL Watchlist and this very useful table creation tool: http://lemonfoolfinancialsoftware.weebl ... ormat.html

£10,000 invested in each stock as at 31/12/2019, apart from NESN as the market was closed (used 30/12/2019 instead). I backdated a few days for future convenience in comparing with AIC and ETF provider sites.

As this is a fantasy portfolio fractional numbers of shares were purchased.

Mid prices were used with zero dealing costs and no stamp duty. Yes I know this is unrealistic, but over a decade it will not matter much. Prices obtained from LSE for London listed stock, Yahoo Finance for foreign stock.

The HL Watchlist uses the bid price. Sensible for long positions, but often pessimistic, especially for the more illiquid stocks. Again should not matter over a decade.

Exchange rates on purchase were GBPUSD 1.3262, GBPCAD 1.7249, GBPCHF 1.2704.

As a portfolio we are doing ok, up 1.48%.

Here we are as at month end:

I'd be happy to send information about my picks "dividends" to HRP if that is of any help.

Thank you HRP for the time you have committed to this fantasy portfolio.

I used the recent hysteria to buy some Mastercard at $284 so my theoretical the end of year buy at $315 has been off to a poor start. I expect I'll buy some more on the way down to Armageddon.

I'm hoping it's that low or cheaper when I have the funds to buy more in April. It's down around 20% compared to its recent peak.
