Sometimes being contrary can help, in certain cases. Know the history of the company and its economic performance so far. Look for recent announcements.

Example : Digging out Barclays Equity Gilt Study 2016 and the UK Equity total return index at the end of 1979 = 3165. End of 1999 = 103120. So a 19% accumulation annualised reward over those 20 years.
