Careless People?

Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams

Has anybody read this book that Meta is trying to ban the promotion of in the US?
It looks like it would be a good read.

Meta exposé tops bestseller chart despite company’s attempt to ban its promotion

An exposé by a former employee of Meta has become a bestseller despite the social media company banning the author from promoting the book.

Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams, a former director of global public policy at Meta’s precursor, Facebook, topped the New York Times bestseller chart and will be fourth on the Sunday Times nonfiction hardback chart this weekend.

The book “sold a staggering 1,000 hardbacks a day in the first three days on sale in the UK, despite Meta’s legal tactics to silence the book’s author”, said Joanna Prior, CEO of publisher Pan Macmillan. “This early success is a triumph against Meta’s attempt to stop the publication of this book.”

The book is fourth on the overall Amazon US chart, and 13th on the Amazon UK chart.

Last Wednesday, Meta won an emergency arbitration ruling which placed a temporary hold on Wynn-Williams promoting the book. The American Arbitration Association’s emergency arbitrator, Nicholas Gowen, said that without emergency relief, Meta would suffer “immediate and irreparable loss”. Meta argued that the memoir is prohibited under a non-disparagement agreement signed by Wynn-Williams.

A quote from the review of the book:

"Last week, Meta responded to this book, calling it “a mix of out-of-date and previously reported claims about the company and false accusations about our executives”. The company has denounced its former employee, claiming that she was not a whistleblower but a disgruntled activist trying to sell books. Most likely she is both."

Must be hare-brained lies by disgruntled little missus who was overlooked in the board room and probably got groped on a flight by sweaty diplomat who thought she was the entertainment.
Libtard guff designed to undermine the great work of a great man. It was only 20 odd years ago we had the application of software to asses the prettiness of the female students at colleges. Look where we have come.

No not read it or even heard of it till now.

Might be hard to work out the truth in all this which is likely to be one sided. If it was so bad why stay 7 years.

What was your take after reading it.

She's been doing the rounds of the meeja to promote it. I've heard her discussed and interviewed on BBC radio. Given the subject, and the huge numbers who want to find evil in "meta", it's no wonder it's selling well.

As for where she stands on a scale from whistleblower to fantasist, I wouldn't presume to judge - though I daresay both descriptions hold at least an element of truth. And being a bestselling author is of course profitable!

It reminds me of 'Spycatcher' in the 1980s. Got loads of free publicity cos it was banned in the UK. Turned out to be a load of rubbish.

Of course, we will never learn who received the brown stuffed envelopes passed under tables. ;)
