Just re-reading my rather battered copy of "Domesday book and beyond" by FW Maitland. Looks a forbidding account of (mainly) the law of land tenure but is in fact a vivid re-creation of English social history a thousand years ago. It's not for the faint-hearted: Maitland assumes the reader has a smattering of Latin, Norman French, Middle English, Anglo-Saxon and old High German, but he is a superb and lucid writer and at the time of writing (1890s) knew more about the subject than anyone else on earth.
