Nasa Mars rover: The clanking sound of Perseverance's wheels

BBC News

Nasa's Perseverance rover has extended its Martian playlist.

"After sending back sounds of the wind and the zaps of its laser, the robot has just recorded the noise coming from its metal wheels as they clank across the planet's rocky surface."

Sounds like a clanky old lawn-mower.

I like this from the text: In amongst the clatter, engineers say they can hear a kind of scratching noise, the source of which they are still trying to identify.

Spine chilling stuff  It immediately reminded me of the final sentence of an Arthur C Clarke short story: "There was no mistaking the sounds of claws - ahead of them" *.

*the contest being that they had got through what they thought was the point of lethal danger in a pitch black gorge.
