Which one is closer to happening?
Maybe we need Quantum computing first for fusion to happen?

We have done something & we think it is really good & we have told the press.
The press don’t understand how good this is, so we have got other people to say how good it is.
No one has bothered to try & explain what we did which just goes to show how clever we are & how stupid the people who read this & pay our salaries are.

Seems to be triggered by the publication in Nature Comms of this paper from Akhtar et al, A high-fidelity quantum matter-link between ion-trap microchip modules, although it's been kicking around arXiv since March 2022.
Whilst there will inevitably be a lot of stuff happening in this area off the radar, the IBM roadmap gives an idea of where things stand, you'll note that their big thing for 2023 is parallelisation of both hardware and software, after that error correction is the big problem :
