Some of his work is a bit on the heavyside for me; there were times I just wanted to curl up.

No doubt about that but it is not so much the technical side of his work that I was impressed by it is his background and application plus of course the huge effect he had on modern technology. Of course there is a fairly convincing argument that if he had not followed up the development of Faraday's work someone else undoubtedly would have.
