I remember reading about the Bryn Eglwys slate mine in mid Wales, and raison d'etre for the Tal-y-llyn Railway. This gradually wound down during the 1930s to abandonment in 1946 due to a major roof collapse which occurred on Boxing Day and therefore killed nobody. Miners moved away to work in the South Wales coal mines, which they thought were far safer than the slate mines.
