The Gut Microbiome

Interesting article in the Guardian today:

Lots of things that people don’t think about, like depression or anxiety, are very clearly modified by your gut microbes. Appetite and ability to digest food are modified by gut microbes. The key finding recently is the link with the immune system. Basically, the gut microbiome is controlling it, sending signals, because most of your immune system is in your gut, helping you fight infections, such as Covid and early cancers, that the immune system is picking off.

Your gut microbiome weighs about 2kg and is bigger than the average human brain. It’s a bustling community of trillions of bacteria, archaea, fungi and viruses, containing at least 150 times more genes than the human genome.

I knew a bit about it, but that is a very interesting article
I have listened to a lot of Tim Spector in relation to Covid19 and he talk a lot of sense, in a very measured, reassuring manner
I'm not a baker so where can I buy blue muffins ?
or will this do the job?

Yes that will do it.

I find eating sweetcorn does the job too.

.

confirms what i have been thinking for some time - there is a huge amount unknown about our digestive system / alimentary canal / gut .

if this organ is similar in size to the liver , where can we find a picture of it ?

:?: :?:

Bah! That's nothing. Some of us like to chew the cud and belch:

To elaborate on this theme here is a recent podcast from the ZOE team including Tim Spector, very interesting. The kit referred to towards the end is only available in the US as far as I can tell but you can register your interest on the site for when it becomes available here.

Meant to add actually, the blue muffin thing is fine if you're interested in how long it takes food to traverse the digestive tract, useful to know I'm sure, but I'm more interested in the composition of my microbiome and whether there are any foods that particularly agree/disagree with me, it's even different in identical twins. The kit helps with that but it will be fascinating to see how the technology develops over the coming years as they start to understand the data.

The gut microbiome is now being referred to as a new organ, weighing about the same as the brain and has about the same number of cells as the human body itself, in other words we are only half human.

In the meantime keep eating those plants - 30 different types per week minimum.
