Thanks for the replies.

Diagnosis: nothing serious noted, probably just being overused and a bit strained.

Recommendation: take it easy for a few more weeks.

My wife was concerned because she saw how swollen and painful it was getting so she took control and imposed a substantial wrist support on me last week and informed me that it would be staying on for several days (and any time in the next few weeks when I might be doing something repetitive or straining it).
Some tough love (borrowing a phrase from one of the posts above).
Had a lazy last several days, took support off earlier and feels much better but will be careful for a few more weeks.
