Yellow Toenail Fungus

This is a non painful condition but it causes the toenails to grow thicker and unsightly.

Before any bright spark suggests red nail varnish(!), I am trialling colorless iodine painted on daily as reccommended by Dr Berg on Youtube.

He reckons this treatment beats Epsom Salts and even Tea Tree.

A medical solution might be Lamisil but that costs much more. That and other chemist treatments apparently can years to work.

I,m on Day 3 atm but should have sand papered the nails first to enable the iodine to permeate through to the nail beds.

Bastard file, angle grinder and Dremel might also help?

Let us know if it works. I have this condition on a big toe and no one has been able to find a cure for it.

The commonest medical condition in the United States, I gather. And probably just about everywhere else. ;)

I've had mine on two nails for five or six years now, and I've tried (and heard) just about everything. cider vinegar, iodine and tea tree oil, and three or four medicinal treatments - and I'm currently back to holding the line with amorolfine (sold as Curanail or Loceryl), because it's the only thing that seems to work even sporadically.

I once took part in a medical trial of amorolfine, and apparently I had the same result as all the other participants at my doctor's surgery. It worked promisingly for three months or so, and then just didn't. Nobody seemed to know why, but it probably wasn't that people were skimping on the weekly application. I was certainly doing the filing thing quite assiduously, with a rasp. I never did fancy the Dremel approach.

Be careful with tea tree oil, because there's a reason why they tell you to dilute it. Can cause rashes, allergies, and according to some, nerve damage. I couldn't possibly comment. :|

i learnt about a thing called candida overgrowth last year. pretty sure i have it. tried to get rid with a keto diet for about 6-7 weeks. felt good while on the diet but joyless existence. the one thing that has lasted since (about 8 months) is that i have not had any athletes foot since. i used to get it at least every couple of months. apparently too much sugar in the diet fuels the overgrowth and the candida itself fuels the addiction to sugar. so lots of americans having fungal issues makes sense since i think they are even more addicted to sugar than us. maybe keto diet whilst using these treatment might help.

No personal endorsement, but some of the most interesting stuff I've seen on the subject is by Ivan Bristow, a senior dermatologist at Oxford and later Southampton university who now specialises privately in podiatry. It isn't a glamorous subject, especially before breakfast  , but it seems rigorously researched. Worth a google if you're interested?

diabetes and bad blood circulation can cause these problems.

there are also remedies to drink.

infrared laser rays can help too.
this give me an idea: to use an infrared lamp close to the nails. But be carefully in protecting the eyes.

Has the Doc absolutely ruled out Psoriasis? It can affect toenails in a very similar way to what has has been described here. Any red patches of skin around elbows or knees? Any swollen toe or finger joints?

I have to admit that I don't really suffer much, i.e. no pain or itching, but my right big toe nail thickens and grows very fast, and yes, I have used a dremel tool!

Though these days, I use a good nail file to keep it under control.

I did have psoriatic arthritis in my hands and feet but funnily enough, regular high doses of vitamin D got rid of it within a few weeks.

After several months of prescribing Trosyl (an anti fungul agent applied to the nail) my GP told me that the only way to get rid of toenail fungus was to have the nail removed and what lay beneath to be treated with an anti fungul agent. The day I was due to have my nail removed by my local hospital coincided with heavy snow and my appointment was cancelled not postponed. Then I was referred to a foot person (podiatrist or chiropodist) who told me just to live with it which I have done. Unfortunately the fungus has spread to other toes and the other foot but that is another story.

Oxygenated water? Never heard of that before, thought it might be another name for hydrogen peroxide (I'm no chemist) but no, it's just water with added oxygen which seems to be a 'health product' of dubious benefit:

Is there any point in drinking oxygenated water?
Simple answer. No!

https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/healt ... ated-water

But maybe it treats Yellow Toenail Fungus, but then in the article it says:

The most salient point is that a single breath of air contains more oxygen than a liter of oxygenated water.

So, it might be better to blow on your toes or maybe wave them around in the wind.

Crumbly toenail clippings, cracked toes and small pimples. I diagnosed myself with athlete's foot and fungal nail infection.

A year ago I googled and discovered a suggestion of Vickes Vapourub. Being a skinflint, dubious of proprietary remedies and fortunate to have a twenty-year-old jar of the minty medicated goo.

I tried it. Daily after a shower, I rubbed it into the surface of the nail, worked it under the nail and rubbed the excess between my toes.

It's taken a year for the final part of the yellowed nail to grow out, and now I have fresh, non-crumbly toenail clippings. The cracked skin has disappeared. Only the small pimples still occur. Perhaps that is something else.

I've also noticed at the end of the day my shoes and socks are not smelly at all. So I'd recommend giving Vapourub a try.

there was a translation error (my error). Where i wrote "oxigenated water" the correct is hydrogen peroxide.
hydrogen peroxide 1:10, one drop in every nail.

LOL, I just remembered that you don't live in this part of the world. Sun at 12 o'clock every day? Barefoot in the car park? I should be so lucky. ;)

This condition is commoner in warm climates because people are more likely to stub their toes barefoot or wearing sandals and that's one way for the fungus to get a hold.

I run and damage my toe nails and collect fungal nail infections. My GP advises just ignoring them as harmless and cosmetic. I am not vain so don't mind although it would be nicer to have health toe nails

You realise that Mr Berg isn't a medic i hope. He has also if he's the one i am thinking of had some run ins with regulators. He is very convincing but not to be relied on.

Mr. Berg is not the unique man in the world that defends the use of iodine for toenail.
In my region, one laboratory sells a product with iodine, salicilic acid, benzoic acid, KI and another substance.
