Dod101’s caution is valid, but I suspect – or at least hope – that in the minds of hospital staff there is a difference between the more-or-less mandatory tips or non-pecuniary gifts to certain individuals (which I know is as customary in parts of the East as tipping waiters and cab drivers is here) and providing cheap break-time snacks to all staff on a Ward.

It was done discreetly and out of view of other patients or their visitors, precisely to pre-empt the possibility of ‘visitor competition’ noted earlier.

And I would do it again: the staff were grossly overworked and underpaid but never overtly took shortcuts in patient care - or lose a sense of humour!
