Historical share prices - IAG

#389291

Postby cheddarcheese » February 23rd, 2021, 6:17 pm

Hi.. hoping someone smarter than me can help out my small brain, as I am confused.

I (stupidly) purchased some IAG shares during February and March 2020, thinking it can't get any worse, right?! Of course, it got much much worse... but that's not the point.

What I don't understand is why different sources have different historical prices for IAG. e.g. sharesmagazine.co.uk has the following data for Feb 24th 2020:

Date Open High Low Close Volume
Feb 24, 2020 394.26p 399.71p 384.99p 385.80p 20,605,151

But Yahoo finance has this:

Date Open High Low Close* Adj. close** Volume
24 Feb 2020 578.40 586.40 564.80 566.00 522.10 20,605,151

Clearly, quite a difference between them on these days and all subsequent days. However, if I look at these two sources more recently, they are exactly the same. Obviously, my purchase is at the higher of these! Londonstockexchange.com history corresponds with sharesmagazine.

What am I missing please?

thanks

Perhaps currency, eyeballing a google chart of the sp of IAG I can't see it ever getting been above 450p in sterling in 2020, I see dividenddata suggest they pay out in Euro. Now might be a good time to add to your holding if one flet this time the lock down will end and not come back again. I heard holiday sites are flooded with enquiries and bookings.

I suspect the Yahoo numbers are using $ not £

Thanks for the responses.

Neither Euro or USD works out, in terms of the exchange rates on those days. Also, doesn't explain why the numbers are equal now.

I suspect it is to do with how they have adjusted historical prices for the Sept 2020 rights issue. At the point a shareholder became entitled to 'rights' to subscribe for new shares, their previous asset of shares in IAG is divided into 2 assets - the fully paid IAG share already held and the value of the right to subscribe to a new share. So these websites will probably have adjusted the price history before that to reflect it.

You can also look at the price history on the London Stock Exchange website, which may be more reliable

If you compare various dates, you can find that the 2 lists differ from Sept 11, 2020 backwards. Googling that date, we find:

https://www.sharesmagazine.co.uk/news/s ... -concerned

https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/quote/IAG. ... ry?p=IAG.L
https://www.sharesmagazine.co.uk/shares ... ric-prices
https://www.londonstockexchange.com/sto ... ge?lang=en

Shares in British Airways owner International Consolidated Airlines (IAG) are apparently down nearly 30% this morning to 137.6p.

But before investors panic that this dizzying descent is a sign of new distress for the troubled airline – this is a technical issue linked to the company’s rights issue as the shares trade ex-rights.

Having announced its plans at the end of July, the company launched a £2.5 billion rights issue last week as it looks to weather the Covid-inspired storm hammering the aviation sector.

So one list takes this into account, the other doesn't (to be precise, the Shares mag one shows a one-day blip on Sep 11, while Yahoo shows the higher historic price for all the dates before then too; the LSE chart doesn't show a blip at all).

I've found that historical share prices on Yahoo can be totally incorrect.
A couple of years ago, they had an incorrect chart for my largest holding, which was running at about 20% above the actual price. That one has since been corrected. I don't know how they did it, as if a currency error creeps in, there should be a step in the data at the point where the error stops and ends & Yahoo didn't have that.

As far as I can tell, google historical share price data is more reliable. However, even on that I've seen errors.
In the google case (one specific stock) it was almost certainly a currency error, as there was a sudden step up in the share price, followed a few weeks later by a sudden step down. The step corresponded to the GBP:USD exchange rate.

So I prefer to use google data & do a plausibility check on the graph.

Hi CheddarCheese.

For what it's worth, I use this site for historic data - though my needs are modest.
