Olympic broadcast schedules

#432655

Postby Arborbridge » August 5th, 2021, 11:12 am

Is it just that I'm incompetent or is TV coverage a bit of a train crash?

Does anyone know where I can see which sports are being broadcast and when? It all seems a bit random, like a lucky dip which for me is a big turn off.

Specifically, I'm, interested in watching the finals of the sports climbing on Friday, but as I am going out all day, I need to know when to record it.

So far, I can find out when the events are, and when various BBC unspecified programs are, but where is the link between the two which tells when or if these events are being broadcast? - whether it be live or recorded, I don't care!

Frustrating that the "authorities" should make what ought to be simply available information a guessing game.

Try this
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/57778808
It has a handy Brit and World watch as well

A bit more googling found Friday's sports climbing
https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/olympic ... -08-06.htm
Note: All times in venue local time

Yes, thanks.
I also found something which gives the information in UK time. But there's nothing to say if or when this will be broadcast or on which channel, that's the difficulty.

You'd think someone somewhere would be know otherwise is the BBC working on a random selection?
The problem is compounded if I go out and want to record the climbing because there are potentially two channels to record.

Interesting - I don't think the Women's football between the Aussies and Amercia was even highlighted on that schedule. Yet they broadcast it on RB1, and it proved to be a cracking match, which I only found as I randomly switched on see what I could find out.

What annoys me about the BBC and the Olympics is this series link issue

You mean clicking on "Change" in the above page? :D

The problem is compounded if I go out and want to record the climbing because there are potentially two channels to record.

What you need to do is go to the BBC1 TV guide for the day, https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/guide/bbcone/20210806, and then click on the "Programme website" for each programme, e.g. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000yj47, and then click on "Show More" and you will find...

1030-1420 Sport climbing women's final (0940-1004 Speed, 1029-1159 Bouldering, 1310-1400 Lead)

So, looks like, on BBC1 at least, they're not covering the Speed, although may be flicking back and forth to it in pauses during prior events.

Of course, that doesn't tell you what's on the Red Button and the website is unhelpful on that, https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000yk9y, and I've seen instances of them switching live coverage of an event between BBC1 and the Red Button.

However, all is not lost as everything that is shown on BBC1 and the RB is available on iPlayer, https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/b00cmh07/olympics so, if, as you imply, you only have the capability to record one channel, then what I'd suggest is that you record BBC1 and go to iPlayer if they switch.

Thanks for that - helping me through the Byzantine BBC website, which I've always had a problem with. I made the mistake of going to the BBC home page on my phone, which was a dead-end unless you know where to go next, and the search box returns nothing useful.

Well. it looks like IK have enough info now to have a 70% chance of success, and iplayer to fall back on.
Thanks for your help.

Actually, despite everyone's efforts to help, I am still having to record as much as I can on two channels simultaneously. This is because the program guide shows the broadcast as a monolithic chunk and on my particular TV recorder I cannot slice it up in sections. So even if I knew when a particular event was being broadcast I cannot record, say, between 11 and 12.00 if the guide says the program is from 09.00 and 15.00. I cannot manually alter the recorded time.

I'll just record RB1 on one channel, and BBC1-BBC2-BBC1 on the other.

It's a sledgehammer to crack a nut, and even then it looks as though they may not be broadcasting all the climbing.

A request that that spoilers should be prominently marked. IMHO Arborbridge did nothing wrong here, but please no further.

But no-one said it was a spoiler though.

Just a polite request that spoilers, should they be made, should be prominently marked.

Asking me to make no further spoilers when I haven't made one? :?: Reporting that the match between USA and Auss was a cracker is a recommendation, not a spoiler.

I may be missing the point here so apologies if i am but isnt all this stuff on watch-again anyway? ie no need to record at preset times and channels?

unless you are planning ton wait 18 months before watching it maybe?

Well, possibly - I didn't know if it was or not, and in any case it is far easier for me just to record what I want rather than fiddle about with iplayer. No doubt that's because I have a cranky system, but it is far more direct to set a program to record than find it afterwards.

Anyhow, in the end I had to record the whole of RB1 and the programs on BBC1 and 2, then skip through them in the evening when I came home.

And..success! Not only did I had all the sports climbing I wanted, but a few bonus events I hadn't expected to see. Even though it seemed like they may not broadcast the womens' "speed" climb, they did - wow! The lead clmbing is strangely compulsive - like snooker one is always wanting to know the next move and what happens next.

A bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but it worked at the risk of running out recording space.
