Slate placemats

I recently bought a set of slate placemats.
I didn't realise that they came just as untreated slate. I'd assumed* that they would have some protective coating.
They don't. Should i treat them with some sealant? varnish? and if so what?

If I leave them will they get grease-stained? ( young family).

* To assume is to make an 'ass' out of 'u' and 'me'

TIA
Tom

Apparently some are coated and some aren't. Those that are seem to have an acrylic coating...
... our products including slate placemats, slate cheeseboards and slate platters are treated with an acrylic finish complying with BN6250 requirements...

A light wipe with diluted PVA wood glue would seem to provide a similar treatment (not sure about the BN6250 requirements though, but then you're not eating off them :) )

Those that aren't (for serving plates, at least) suggest...
Once received please wash(high setting dishwasher) and oil your slate plates using a good quality olive oil...

Did yours come with any care instructions?

I believe that some slate products are coated with linseed oil. At least that's what Mrs W's cousin in North Wales puts on those he sells.

Just rub cooking oil into them ... Worked for me!

I find that when we have young children for a meal giving them an old slate placemat together with a small pebble to draw with keeps them amused for ages. The grown ups often join in as well.

Got any good recipes?

It's a long time since I ate meat, but I might be tempted to make an exception.
