Some "out there" observations

  • No street lights

I see a gas light in the centre of the street on the right hand side.

Bingo !! Sorry to spoil the fun .

The original poster had another look and thought the street sign may have said Ethel Street ..Surprising how many Ethel Streets there are but pretty quickly found this one in Northampton .

Not sure on the technical term but strange how the depth of field on old photos seems to cram in more detail than a modern image .

What's the story behind the "ghost writing" above the old shop window?

"cave canem post factum nullum consilium" - beware of the dog .........

Scott.

Yes but in these modern times one can end up inside a barber's shop, when trying to establish what happened to the houses at the end of the street.

cave canem post factum nullum consilium

How weird , didn't notice that . Must be a posh lot in Northampton !! :)

P.S. Just to confirm the location , on the 1911 Census a widow , Mary Ward , shopkeeper was living at 5 Ethel Street with her daughters . Street must have been re-numbered as today it appears to be number 16

?

Can see no sign of that. The only "ghost writing" I can see is on the modern image: "2013/18? Google"

OK! Got it now.

Reminds me I used to see a white van/small lorry around my area a few years ago that had signage writing in Latin for something like: 'Without antecedents' (precedence?) written on it.

Having found the location I think this could possibly be the reason for the assembly of troops in Ethel Street .

THE CALL TO ARMS.
This Week’s Recruiting March. The detachment the Ist/4th Northamptonshire Regiment, which has been doing week’s recruiting march through the county this week, arrived at the Castle Station , Northampton ...and were accorded a loyal welcome .
..........
All Saints Church has witnessed many historic scenes but few more memorable than Sunday last, when the men attended church parade. In addition to the detachment the lst/4th (Northamptonshire Regiment) numbering 160, there were present about 430 recruits the 3rd/4th Battalion, who are at present training in Northampton.

02 July 1915 - Northampton Mercury

See about halfway down here https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/units/277/northamptonshire-regiment, if they formed the 3/4th Battalion Territorial Force. If I've understood correctly, they may never have gone abroad but the details are brief.

Thanks for the link . That history of the 1st/4th Northamptonshire Territorials agrees with part of the newspaper article above (not shown
) in that though called the Northamptonshires they were based in St.Albans . They had moved there a few months before that recruitment march in Northampton town .
From your link .

1/4th Battalion Territorial Force
04.08.1914 Formed at Northampton as part of the East Midlands Brigade of the East Anglian Division and then moved to Bury St. Edmunds.

May 1915 The formation became the 162nd Brigade of the 54th Division and then moved to St. Albans area.
July 1915 Deployed to Lemnos.

15.08.1915 Landed at Suvla Bay and engaged in various actions against the Turkish Army.

Dec 1915 Moved to Egypt to defend the Suez Canal. Then engaged in the Palestine Campaign;

This was one of Northampton's old shoemaking areas. I used to have my riding boots made just north of here in Henry street.
