Bees Wax on Oak with Polyurethane Varnish

#294856

Postby AsleepInYorkshire » March 27th, 2020, 4:34 pm

We bought a preowned fish tank recently. We're using it to quarantine newly purchased fish before they are put in my daughters main fish tank. It was in need of a little tender care. It's got an oak base and cover.

This is it.

It's finished in what I suspect is a polyurethane varnish. I've been adding bees wax and polishing it up.

I've applied more beeswax to the top than the base. The top seems to look slightly darker than the bottom now and the grain just looks more pronounced. It looks good.

I have no idea if the beeswax is soaking through the polyurethane or sitting on top.

Am I just imagining the top looks better (noting my good lady and daughter both agree with my view) ?

Is the beeswax capable of permeating the polyurethane?

I would say not, but it will fill in any scratches and brush marks in the surface.
