Historical army ranks

#390069

Postby XFool » February 25th, 2021, 8:18 pm

Can anyone offer any help with this, sorry there is very sparse information to go on.

Somebody in the English army, early part of the 20th century, described as: Sergeant AOS

What would the AOS mean? (Could be AOC)

Thanks for any help.

Page 4 provides some possibilities but might not fit your date:

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... _dec08.pdf

I think you mean British Army but if NZ you’d have seen Armed Offenders Squad (which isn’t for Armed Offenders).

Edit: It looks like AiY already has the answer but is he certain that is not USA?

Is that likely? Sergeant Assistant operations Sergeant?

Not that I can help much. The best I can find are references to Age of Sigmar in Warhammer.

Scott.

Yes but I’ve yet to establish what “IPT” means!

Edit: Integrated Projects Team. Doesn’t sound very early 20th century (man).

According to the same source:

IPT Information Processing Techniques
IPT Integrated Procurement Team
IPT Integrated Project Team
IPT Integration Project Team
IPT Intelligent Procedure Trainer

None of which leaves me any the wiser. It is stunning how many acronyms the MOD has or used to have. Is an intelligent Procedure Trainer a procedure trainer who is intelligent or a trainer of intelligent procedures. We should be told.

Army Ordnance Corps (AOC) - Renamed 'Royal Army Ordnance Corps' (RAOC) 1918

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Army_Ordnance_Corps

Thanks for all the suggestions, but we are talking pre WW I here!

Is it his unit?
In 1894 the Ordnance Store Corps (OSC) was retitled the Army Ordnance Corps (AOC)
Became the Royal Army Ordnance Corps (RAOC) in 1918.

That’s good to know but it seems quite of few of us were looking for AOS - your in time edit to include maybe AOC not being spotted!

Interesting you said “English Army” earlier. Any connection with your Irish Census etc research mentioned today?

More likely doing service in Ireland. He had been in Africa ~5 years before. This is practically pushing back to the Boer War. His wife was from Londonderry, he was English.
