I am familiar with the fact that Giant Hogweed sap can be dangerous, causing blisters which react badly to sunshine, and is a particular danger in the eyes.
I have been strimming Hogweed (not Giant Hogweed) growing in a paddock among grass, which I thought was safe. However, I now have an area of my forearm with a number of blisters.
Does Hogweed carry a similar danger to Giant Hogweed?

It's much (much) less nasty
- most things can cause a bit of dermatitis in concentration

Not only Hogweed, we used to have plenty in our garden but glyphosate fixed that. My OH pulled out some parsnips a couple of weeks ago that should have been pulled last year, they had leaves about a yard long. She then developed Hogweed rash symptoms despite not being able to find any in the garden. A little research found that other plants including 'snips can, under the right conditions, cause the same harm as Hogweed. Go careful out there

Hi,

Been there done that! On my legs.

Now wear long trousers and long sleeves and gloves when strimming. I try to avoid strimming them and don't have much now.

I was baffled and went to the Doc as going on holiday (afraid it might be something else). He asked if i had been spraying chemicals but when I mentioned strimming normal hogweed he suggested a cream E45? or to just leave it. Can't remember which I did but rash went away in about a week.

Hope yours clears up quickly.

Is this hogweed and parsnip mild rash anything like nettle sting? The latter being rather topical since I fell into a big patch of nettles yesterday.

No, definitely not. Nettles are a temporary mild irritant, Hogweed and the like can cause serious permanent scarring.
