Disappearing Trout
My wife used to frequently buy trout in the supermarket. She tells me that it has been impossible to find for some time now. Anyone know why?

I don't know but trout is one of the very few freshwater fish you ever see in a fishmonger so I would assume that the supply chain is rather different to most other fish.
I have not seen brill or sea bream recently either, and one source told me that it was due to over-fishing, but then there is always someone claiming that.

Morrisons had trout last week and/or the week before - next I'm in I'll check again.

Several of the supermarkets have had supplies of farmed Scottish sea trout - when in fillets, it looks rather like salmon. I can't say I've seen much Rainbow Trout on offer.

Re: Disappearing Trout
It must be three years at least since I've seen trout in Sainsburys, unless you count the checkout assistant with the pearls and the cardigan.
Two years ago, I asked the fishmonger about it. He looked me straight in the eye and said that most of Britain's trout come from Scotland and they'd all been caught. I tried to press him for a more credible reply, but he wasn't giving anything away.
I can only suppose that there's been an infestation of some sort? Either that, or else China has cornered the market. Well, thirdly, maybe the dolphins from the Hitch-Hiker's Guide really have scoffed the lot and are now getting ready to leave?

Rainbow trout are forrin invaders IIRC. It's only brown trout that are indigenous, the real thing, are they not?

This may partially explain the last year.
Was it just me, or did anybody else find that that weblink simply flashed its colours on the surface for a split second and then disappeared without a trace? I tried it with Chrome and Edge, but for me it's the one that got away. How frustrating.

Can't answer that but it works for me using Chrome. C.bungeejumper wrote:Was it just me, or did anybody else find that that weblink simply flashed its colours on the surface for a split second and then disappeared without a trace?

Worked for me using firefox in Privacy mode, didn't try it in other modes or using another browser.
Brief summery: article 20/4/2020, Supermarkets had to close wet fish counters due to covid. Catering trade closed. Nobody fishing as they would be arrested for driving to the fishing sites. Comments from a Trout farming company in Scotland that produces 450 tonnes of the fish pa.
Oh, and yes. Rainbow trout is no more native than bunny rabbits or edible dormice. They were all imported, mostly to be farmed and eaten. I believe that in the 90's ostrich farming was a thing, again hardly native. I thought the thread was about what was available in the supermarket rather then native flora and fauna.

Thanks, all. Must be something there that my Kaspersky antivirus doesn't like. As described, I get the picture of the two trout and then the screen goes white and everything stops. Weird.

If that kind of trout disappears, you have a crime scene.

In my considered opinion those trout have a viral infection and Kaspersky is protecting you. C.bungeejumper wrote:Must be something there that my Kaspersky antivirus doesn't like.

Re: Disappearing Trout
What about smoked trout and salmon trout? I don't remember seeing them anywhere for years. Sometimes Sainsbury's didn't have prawns either while supplies went bad in lorries queuing up to deliver supplies to Europe. Why don't the fisheries concentrate more on supplying British consumers instead of moaning about export problems, freight costs etc? The price of fish seems to have escalated here recently; goodness knows what the Europeans pay after freight costs have been added.

Lidl always seems to have it. Which is more than you can say these days for some staples
No idea if it's any good - I don't buy farmed fish.
