Comparing Portfolio Against A Benchmark

#428766

Postby Pendrainllwyn » July 19th, 2021, 12:50 pm

I am hoping someone can help me.

I have been running a UK Equity Portfolio since March 1 2020 and wish to compare performance versus the FTSE 100 Index.
The FTSE100 Index closed February 28 2020 at 6,580.61.
July 16 2021 the FTSE100 closed at 7,004.47 an increase of 6.44%.
However, I understand the Index excludes dividends paid out during the period so I need to add that.
I can approximate dividends by assuming a dividend yield of say 4% for 16 1/2 months. That's an extra 5.50% so a total return of 11.94%. I would prefer an accurate figure. Can anyone tell me where I can find the actual dividends paid out in a given period for the FTSE 100 (and ideally any other Index) expressed in Index points? So, for example, how many Index points for the FTSE100 between March 1 2020 and July 16 2021 inclusive?

Thank you,
Pendrainllwyn

Perhaps you could use the FTSE 100 Total Return (TRIUKX) -

Thank you both for the quick response.
That works. 11.17% over that time period.
Much appreciated.

You can use the total return index, as others have noted, but another perhaps more realistic comparison would be an ETF ... after all, you can't actually buy the index itself, but you could buy, e.g. CUKX....
