Following on from the passport thread...

Not really a DAK, but is it common knowledge that since Brexit if you want to travel to Europe and are looking at how much time you have till your passport expires you need to look at the issue date, not the expiry date? If you had your current passport renewed 6 months early it has "expired" 6 months before the expiry date printed on it and you could set off for the airport thinking you had plenty of time left on it, only to be turned away because it had expired !

From https://www.gov.uk/guidance/passport-ru ... -to-europe
Your passport must also be less than 10 years old on the day after you leave. If you renewed your current passport before the previous one expired, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. Any extra months on your passport over 10 years may not count towards the minimum period needed.

Yes. I renewed my passport 9 months in advance, back when you could. This was the maximum. Now this, along with the requirement to have 6 months validity left on the day of travel to Europe, means I lose the benefit of the last 15 months validity of my passport.

Thanks Brexit.

Well it says 'may' on the link and in any case only applies it would seem because of the EU's strange rules. Forget Brexit; that has happened.

There are plenty of other places you can go to in the world. And there is nothing to stop you having two passports if you want. In any case why would anyone renew their passport 9 months in advance (unless of course going on an extended tour)?

presumably to be extra safe.
all government departments are working at snails pace...due to 'unusualy high volumes etc etc etc'' but your call is important!!

and passport renewal delay wouldnt qualify on a travel insurance claim

how long does it take DVLA to change/complete/return a car V5 ownership paper these days??

I can answer the latter question about the V5 ownership as I have just bought a six month old car. Less than a week I was amazed to notice. I picked up my car one Friday (two weeks ago tomorrow actually) and my new V5 arrived by post in the middle of last week.

Because I could. Because I like to be organised so I don't forget later. Because there was no downside (at the time!).

Can't criticise that but I would never do that as I could be dead by the time I needed the new passport. I also have something against giving Government the money so ahead of time - there is a downside for you!

Actually the tourism department of MI5 is one of the more efficient bits of government - when I renewed my passport recently the old one arrived with them on the Monday and they sent the new one on the Friday. And it doesn't seem particularly related to low levels of travel at the moment, a family member did theirs a couple of years ago and got it within 10 days or so.

As to why - there's all sorts of reasons aside from a long trip - planning to move house, needing the passport to get "complicated" visas ahead of a trip etc.

Although I'm not that organised...

The issue of post-Brexit passport validity is getting more of an airing. I recently had a text from "HM Passport" directing me to a link https://www.gov.uk/check-a-passport-travel-europe

This allows you to put in expiry date etc., and confirms what I already knew - that I need to renew my passport nearly 15 months before its expiry date for travel to Europe.

Apparently we need to have at least six months left on a passport for travel to the EU. Why do you say you need to renew your passport nearly 15 months before its expiry? Why the extra nine months?

See earlier up the thread. (Summary: because I renewed it early.)

Ok but that circumstance is peculiar to you (and anyone else of course who has renewed their passport 9 months in advance). Your post standing alone does not read like that.

Which bit of "I need to renew my passport..." wasn't clear to you?

The generality of the point being made though is that if you renewed your passport early (whether one or nine months),they used to add on the time remaining on the old passport. However, since Brexit the rules are that your passport must be less than ten years old, AND have at least six months remaining when you return from Europe. So a passport renewed in (say) October 2015 two months before it expired (in December 2015), will have an expiry date of December 2025. But the "extra" two months may not be counted. So the passport is generally valid for travel to Europe up till April 2025. (i.e. 10 years from the 'real' renewal date, less 6 months.

I have not been in Europe for a long while but I think that the same 'rule' applies to other parts of the world as well. Anyway since passports are generally issued quickly these days it should be possible to time the application for the best benefit of the holder. But this is not a new issue anyway.

Can confirm that on checking in on a recent flight to spain, there was a sobbing couple ahead of us being denied boarding as his passport was "valid until" Feb 2022, but had been issued just over 10 years ago. The nice lady at the desk assured them she'd get a manager to double check for them but this seemed more a tactic to get them out of the que, she seemed very certain they werent going anywhere.....
