I have a Sharp TV which has had an Amazon Firestick plugged into an HDMI slot for months
My internet connection drops sometimes and then Firetstick needs a reboot
Last week Firestick stopped working, rebooted - still no joy
Plugged it into HDMI slot No. 2 and it's fine
Plugged Sky box which was in No.2 into No.1 and it doesn't work
So it seems that HMDI slot 1 just stopped working
Nothing in my setup has changed
any ideas why that might be and what the fix is
Thanks

Re: HDMI slot stopped working
You've presumably tried unplugging the TV from the mains for a few minutes?

Re: HDMI slot stopped working
Yep
But I'll give that another go now
May have been too impatient first time round
Thanks

Re: HDMI slot stopped working
Still no joy
I can select HDMI 1 from the TV menu but it's blank
I do have an HDMI splitter plugged in as a makeshift solution, but it's a pain to have to keep using another remote to switch the inputs
I just do not undertstand why stops working (sigh) - it's not as if it has moving parts !

Re: HDMI slot stopped working
Electronics with no moving parts can fail because capacitors, resistors or other components fail, or cracks on circuit boards or solder joints open up, particularly on sockets where people keep plugging and unplugging things producing mechanical stress on small components.

Re: HDMI slot stopped working
Ok thanks for the knowledge
I don't plug and unplug unnecessarily
Firestick reboots have been done via the powersocket so as not to foul up the HDMI

Re: HDMI slot stopped working
Where I work I have well over 100 screens to look after and on a couple of occasions a device that was working perfectly one day has failed with no unusual interaction by users but by using and alternative video input slot (in this case VGA) it's all working normally. Not common but by no means not unheard of. Midsmartin gives some examples why.

Re: HDMI slot stopped working
Also electrostatic discharge (ESD) can kill high impedance inputs. So in a domestic environment with carpets it wouldn't be impossible for an unfortunate touch of a finger (if physically possible) on one of the input pins to wreck a (field-effect) transistor within the port.
