Parking Ticket

I parked in my local car park recently. I paid at the ticket machine and was issued with a parking ticket to display on the dash panel. I have just noticed that the ticket expiry date is shown as 9/10/25.

Obviously that should have been 9/10/21 but the machine has printed the wrong date.

What's my chances of successfully defending the use of the ticket for the next 4 years ?

It's so obviously wrong, I'd say Nil.
But you could save it for four years and use it then... or ask the car park operator what they'll pay you to buy it back... or perhaps sell it on eBay.

PS How do you know that the date is wrong? You paid, you have a ticket and you display it. You did not choose the expiry date. I'm not a lawyer, but I can't see you getting into trouble if you use it. But keep it out of the light when not in use. I think the print fades after a while.

The ticket clearly says not transferable......so not any use to anyone else. Yes, yes, I know the practice goes on but that's not permitted. However a ticket with a 4 year expiry date just might be.

I know many Fools would not agree with such a thing, but I think this would be considered a manifest error, with a clear precedent from a recent Supreme Court case involving Lloyds Banking Group. If you tried to defend use of the ticket in court the judge would fail to support you because it was obvious to any reasonable person that a simple printing (or date-setting) error had occurred; further, from the posted terms and conditions at the time and from the value of your payment for the ticket it would be fairly clear how much time you were entitled to park.

Indeed, but I was rather hoping the continued use of this ticket might contribute, in a small way, to the cost of my time travel machine.

Whilst I agree that using it constantly for the next four years might be beyond reasonable, maybe you could put it in a safe place and then in four years' time you can have a free day of parking?

There a couple of problems I foresee in using the ticket in four years' time.

One is that tickets have the amount paid printed on them and there is a remote possibility that the parking charges will be increased during that time.

The other is that the system may be completely different. Printed tickets may be of historical value only, your parking account being charged automatically as you pass the exit ANPR camera.
